Can you talk to us more about your latest single “A Different Way”?
A Different Way was inspired by a number of different arguments that I have had during my life and it is my first single release since 2017, so I am super excited to get it out there!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I guess it was inspired by arguments that I had had in a previous duo! But the message I wanted to convey was of all of the arguments that anyone has ever had in their life! Of course Brexit helped to inspire the song with the constant arguing, and I feel like releasing it just before we “leave” is a good time to get it out there and hopefully we can put the whole chapter behind us, get a clear way forward, and move on!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
No, no plans to release a video for this song, but perhaps one of the songs that I will be releasing later in the year!
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process comes quickly for me for all of my songs. Except once I finish the songs, I re-write the lyrics and re-draft them until the words are perfect! I then perform them, and feel how I felt delivering the lyrics and then re-draft them again. Once it has gone through all that it is usually ready!
The recording process was an interesting one, I recorded it with my producer Leon Itzler, who played the bass and drums, my little sister Lizzie played the Piano and backing vocals, I did the trumpet, guitar and vocals and my sax player Arthur did well…the sax!
How has your time travelling the world has influence your writing?
Well Mexico is a magical place and there is music everywhere! Not just silly Mariachi music, there is awesome stuff there and they all play nylon string guitars like me! France has a thriving music scene as well and I have discovered the electronic stuff that they are hiding over there! I think that you will see the influence of that more as the year goes on!
What role does East London play in your music?
East London is a thriving community of musicians and there are many venues to play. With many musicians around it is not hard to find people to play with and I think you need to be in a place with other musicians to help you to be inspired.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
Certainly, you must! When you play with other people there is a massaging of egos that must take place. Just like when you work with people in the work place. However, in a workplace you have quite a distinguished hierarchy, whereas co-writing the hierachy is all unwritten. This means that you both have to understand the other person well and massage their egos furiously to keep the peace!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I am so excited to say I have five singles coming out this year! I have three (including this one) completely finished now. The other two will be recorded in summer and released later in the year! What a great year it will be for me, and hopefully a very interesting one for music fans to follow!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The second single will be called “Oh So Quiet” and released late April and the third single “Little Man” will be released late June or early July. Singles 4 and 5 of 2019 will be after September some time ????
Will each song be connected in any way or are they standalone tracks?
No they will be standalone tracks, but I want it to form a showcase of the different styles of songs that I can produce to help my listeners understand my sound better. I feel that I have a unique sound, I am never compared to the same artist twice. My voice is also never compared to the same singer, so I want to release these singles to showcase my sound and style that I feel is held together by my unique voice and distinctive melodies that I write.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes later in the year I will definitely plan to play a little tour in France (I can speak the language fairly ok) or maybe northern England and Scotland (my family is Scottish).
What else is happening next in Paul Lynch’s world?
I work as a part time Civil Engineer and the projects that I am managing are coming to a head! What a weird double life I lead!
