INTERVIEW: Alex Sparrow

Hi Alex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I am great, thanks! Looking forward to answering your questions!

So you are back with the release of an Anti-Bullying video – how did you come up with this idea?

I think everyone of us has faced this problem in one form or another, and we are all affected by it in some way. It happened to me when I was a kid — I grow up in a small town where all the teenagers in my neighborhood were “skinheads”, listening to hard rock and heavy metal. But I liked listening to rap music and wearing oversized “rap” clothes, so I was different from everyone else, and that was a problem. The whole time we lived there, I was getting bullied and beaten up for being different. I tried to fight them back as much as I could, but I was younger and smaller than the other guys. I guess the lesson I learned was that sometimes we have to fight to be who we are, even if it’s difficult or painful.

The second time in my life I experienced being different was after a car accident, when I woke up with a massive stroke, half paralyzed and unable to walk or talk. I hated myself the way I was then. I looked backward instead of looking forward, and I had trouble accepting that I would never be exactly the same as I was before. Eventually I realized if you can not become who you were, you can try to become someone even better! It took me over a year to re-learn everything from scratch – to talk, to walk, to sing. And now I know for sure, every day gives you a chance for a new beginning, you just have to be yourself and try to make the best out of who you really are.

Did any event in particular made you want to put together this video?

It was just a combination of things. Instead of always talking about how bullying negatively affects people, I feel like we should talk more about how NOT to be affected by bullying, how to prevent the negative after-effects. This is the important thing we can share with others, and it’s the strongest weapon in any situation.

Will you keep up embracing this message of “Be True, Be You” throughout your upcoming music?

I’m pretty sure I will. I don’t have an exact plan – I didn’t even really plan on making that video ahead of time! Honestly I just woke up one day, started to improvise on piano, and for some reason found myself crying… I was feeling something special which I couldn’t describe, but I took my camera and recorded the music I was playing. Then I just stood in front of the camera and expressed the words coming from my heart. So obviously that video is very real, and I’m glad so many people understand it, and find it touching. I am definitely going to continue to talk about things which I think are important, and of course I’m going to share it through my music as well.

What was the approach you went after with the message to convey with this campaign?

I think everyone should decide for himself what he is and what he can achieve. If you have a dream and a plan, you can work to achieve it despite the naysayers. That’s what my new video “Be true, Be you” is all about!

What do you hope for audience to leave with after watching the video?

Don’t be afraid to be real. No one can tell you who you are and how good you are. It’s up to you to decide.

Speaking of your music, can fans expect a new material?

Of cause! There lots of new songs with the special “Sparrow sound” written already for my American album, and I can’t wait to share it with my audience!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I am planning to release a new single as soon as I find the right partner for the music video I am shooting for it. And choosing a girl for it is not so easy, as I want to make something even greater and crazier than my music video “She’s Crazy But She’s Mine”. (It went viral all over the world, and I had to shoot two additional episodes – the sequel and the prequel of it.) The script I have in mind is a lot of fun, but it demands acting as well, so if you know a girl who is beautiful, funny, and can act – please let me know!

Any plans to hit the road?

I would love to! My first American tour on the West Coast was a great success and a great experience, so I am looking forward to the next!

What else is happening next in Alex Sparrow’s world?

I hope it will be the realization of all my dreams and goals!
