I’ve been feeling really good! I’m happy to be talking with you guys!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Show Me Love”?
Well, “Show Me Love” is my first official single, and I’m just really excited to finally have it out there. I’ve heard a lot of positive feeback, and that’s such a nice feeling because I feel really good about the song, and compared to my other projects in the past it’s definitely more of what I envision for my style and identity as an artist.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The song was inspired by my sister’s relationship issues at the time, which reminded me of what I have been through. So I wrote about being in a relationship with someone who wants you one day, but is gone the next, and then comes back again later. Someone who makes you feel like they care about you, and that they want to be with you, but has a hard time committing. It’s really a back-and-forth game, and the song was me saying “Show Me Love”, and just wishing that this person wouldn’t be so afraid.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I’ve had some ideas for a video but nothing too solid yet.
How was the recording and writing process?
I had the idea for the lyrical content in mind, but I wanted it to be playful and something people could dance to, despite the not-so-happy theme of the song. So when my producer Chris and I sat down and started working through melodies to fit the guitar riff he came up with, I just started dancing around at one point and having fun with it. The melody and the title line just came to me. I also thought adding trumpet would be a fun idea, so Chris got out the trumpet and started playing. When I first laid down the vocal tracks, I had a cold and was really congested, but I worked at it take after take. It’s funny that it worked out like that though, because after listening back to it when it was all put together, I actually liked how my voice sounded for the chorus. So I kept my original vocal takes when Chris and I started working on the mix to release it as an official single. This was our first serious project together, so we spent a lot of late nights working out the details and even started completely from the beginning of the mix a few times to get it right. It was definitely stressful at times but it was a great learning experience for us too.
How Coldplay and Max Frost has influence your writing?
Coldplay has influenced me to use more imagery and to be more poetic with my lyrics. I love their use of metaphors and their ability to make everyday things sound so magical and clever. I really admire how Max Frost is able to add a lot of catchy hooks throughout his songs. He takes a more conversational approach to his lyrics, so I try to do the same with my music, making it easy to understand and sing along with. I think having a nice blend of these different writing styles can help me convey my ideas.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
Well, if if I’m working with someone else on their song, I like to ask what their vision is, what story they want to tell with the song. Once I have an idea of what they want, I will take a few recordings with different melodic and lyrical ideas and we’ll work through them to see which fits best. And if someone is working with me on a song I wrote, I like to be open to any of their ideas and suggestions, and I’ll work with them to find what is best for my idea. In our case with “Show Me Love”, Chris and I both had creative input, and it went really smoothly writing the song. We were very open-minded with one another, which I think is very important when collaborating.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, for sure! We’re working right now on the next release!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not totally sure about the release date yet, but the title of the next song we plan to release is “Running Wild”.
Any plans to hit the road?
Probably not any time soon, because a lot of our focus is in the studio right now. But we are working on some covers that we can definitely incorporate with a live set, once we get more original material together.
What else is happening next in Kathana’s world?
Besides getting the next release together, I’m working on some fun collaborations with other elecrtronic/indie artists, so I’m really excited about that!
