INTERVIEW: Jodye Colliaye

Hi Jodye, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What’s up! Thank you so much for having me, I’ve been great these days. Just taking every day as it comes and trying to live in the moment of things, time is flying by man.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “NTD”?

NTD is all about falling for someone that you have no business catching feelings for. I wanted this song to have as much imagery as possible and kind of toss the listener in the world of the character. I think we’ve all had that one person that we look back on and question “How did I fall for them?” I just wanted to make a song about a normal thing we all go through in life.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I don’t think there was a particular event that inspired the song but definitely a desire of mine. The desire to just find that one person and run away with them. I think at the end of the day everybody wants to be loved. The main character of “NTD” definitely shouldn’t fall in love with his interest, but he ends up running away with her and that’s the main point of it all. There’s a lot of stuff going on nowadays, good and bad. To get away with someone and just escape all of your worries and issues sounds like a fantasy & it’s something we all wish we could do but sometimes can’t.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I won’t say no because anything is possible, but I didn’t intend on releasing a video for it initially. I feel like “NTD” is just super mysterious and I want it to paint a picture in the listeners mind. There’s songs that I feel need a music video behind them and others that necessarily don’t, “NTD” is kind of in the middle of that spectrum right now.

How was the recording and writing process?

I’ve been working on this song since November of last year! Everything is a process. I tend to get a lot of ideas for different songs at different times and “NTD” has just been growing for a few months now. The recording process was nothing short of fun, it’s always cool to bring the track to a studio and see everyone’s reactions to it. The writing process was pretty easy, the lyrics were probably finished in a couple of days but the most interesting part of writing for me is finding the chords that fit with the vibe and sound I’m going for.

What role does Miami play in your music?

Since Miami is such a huge melting pot you have people from all over that listen to so many different things. From Latin to Jazz to Rap it’s all fused together down there. I definitely think all of those genres influence my music in one way or another, like a lot of my songs will have Jazz chords and then Trap bass mixed in there. I think that’s why a lot of people can’t really attach my music to one particular genre because there’s just so many different influences in there.

How do you go on balancing all your different influences together?

That balance is definitely the key. I think the balance is just knowing when certain things are appropriate to use. Knowing what sounds good with something else and making them mesh together smoothly. Music is music, regardless of genre it all makes us feel good and impacts us differently. I’m just very interested in bringing people of different genres together with those various influences.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m constantly writing so there will always be something new on the way, its going pretty great. I’m having fun with all of these songs I’ve been making, there’s a good number of things that will get released this year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I haven’t picked out a release date yet but the song that will come out after “NTD” is probably gonna be this track called “II. You And Me” that’s the sequel to the first song that I ever wrote. Contrary to popular belief, I’ve always been a fan of sequels. I’m still working on polishing that one up and I’ve been getting ideas for it as each day passes.

Would you call this a departure or are you seeking a new direction this time around or would this rather be a continuation?

I feel that we are constantly evolving and growing as people. I think the stuff that I’ve been working on definitely sounds different from my earlier content, but it still has that formula and those influences. I wouldn’t call this a departure or anything but more so just me diving in and tapping into things that I wouldn’t have imagined earlier on in my writing process. I’m excited to see what the future holds!

Any plans to hit the road?

I definitely want to hit the road in the near future! I love traveling and the idea of doing shows in other beautiful places excites me. Being able to connect with people from all over is a dream of mine that I plan on fulfilling very soon.

What else is happening next in Jodye Colliaye’s world?

I’ve been writing and constantly just working on my artistry as well as myself. I love the music, but it isn’t the only thing that I want to do because I never want to limit myself you know. I’ve been writing a lot of comedy skits lately and I’ve been looking into possibly acting and modeling. I have a lot of things that I want to do while I’m here so I’m looking forward to venturing in all of these different routes very soon.
