INTERVIEW: Monique Angele

How would you classify your music?

I would classify my music as contemporary operatic piano pop.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Some of my top 5 musical influences are – Queen, Elton John, The Beatles, Muse, Pink Floyd.

What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want my fans to feel something when they hear my music. I always strive to be as genuine as possible with my music so I hope that comes across.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

The music scene here in Melbourne is quite vibrant. There is always live music happening pretty much every evening. It’s quite an artsy town.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

I think the best concert I’ve been to is Paul McCartney. The Beatles are one of my favourite bands so  seeing him perform was a dream. He is one of the best performers I’ve ever seen.

What I like most about playing live is the adrenaline rush, the energy from the audience and unpredictability of a performance. Performing is exciting to me as sometimes you never know what will happen!

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

I think my favourite song off the album is “Pink Coloured Sky.” The melody, lyrics and production of the song really stands out for me. It’s quite an emotional song. It’s about trying to find bliss and happiness even when there is darkness around you.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Overall I think I have been taking more risks in my music – writing without boundaries. I write organically and a lot of times my songs don’t fit in a box or genre, it constantly changes. I have been told before that every one of my songs sounds different and I like that about my music. I’ve never been one to conform to a formula, structure or style – I do whatever comes naturally.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Queen, and particularly Freddie Mercury all the way!

What’s next for you?

I’m currently writing new material and hoping to record again soon. I’m also booking for shows for 2019 and I’ll see where that takes me!
