INTERVIEW: Amy Swift

Hi Amy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me! Yes all is well thank you, I’ve been working hard, writing lots… excited to share my music…

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Moving”?

Moving’s a song about love. It’s an ode to heartbreak, when you’re in a relationship that you know isn’t good for you, but it’s like an addiction, you know it’s wrong but you can’t let it go.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Ha. Yes.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

It’s being made as we speak… !

How was the recording and writing process?”

I was at my mate Nadeem’s studio, he started playing some keys. I started singing and we put a demo vocal down which had some of the words but was mainly the melody. We wrote some lyrics and then recorded the vocals, most of which ended up staying on the final version. It came together really quickly, which I guess is a good sign…?! !

What was it like to work with Steve Hewitt and how did that relationship develop?

So Nadeem played Steve the demo and asked him if he wanted to play on the track. He (Nadeem) wanted it to have live drums, guitars and bass and thought it would be interesting to get a rock guys take on those and combine them with the soul / trip hop feel of the song. Steve was into it – he thought it reminded him of Tricky.

How much did he get to influence the song?

Steve’s energy and approach encourages artists to ask questions… throw different sounds into the pot… see how a track makes you feel in different situations… His experience of what may or may not work was invaluable in helping make the right production and arrangement choices and help concentrate on the art of the music rather than what’s “right” or expected.!

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

Collaborating with the right people to explore new ideas and directions is always interesting. For me, it’s about getting a vibe, being comfortable enough with each other to be able to be direct with the writing and ideas and not having to be afraid to say what you think & feel.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah that’s the plan. We have some more songs that I’d love to release. I’m also writing and recording with a few different producers. With Moving I feel I’ve found a good take on the music I want to make. The idea’s to build on that and see how the year progresses.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet…

Any plans to hit the road?

Plans? Yeah for sure. I’m hoping to play some shows this year. It’ll be great to try out some more of the songs we’ve been working on and hopefully start getting a solid set together.

What else is happening next in Amy Swift’s world?

More music, more songs, more shows…. So watch this space.
