Luna Neptune and VENTS team up to present you a exclusive listen of Reverse The Hexes, a new 3 track folk EP recorded at Gunfactory Studios in East London by Tom McFall (Biffy Clyro, Pete Doherty, Bloc Party). The EP is a collection of songs that encompasses Neptune’s life long fascination with the portrayal of witches in mass media.

As a child Neptune had a recurring nightmare about a coven of witches that took over her house, possibly induced by obsessive watching of The Wizard of Oz and the 1980’s BBC production of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.  “Sons of Adam, Daughters of Eve” – a phrase taken from the C.S. Lewis classic – open’s the EP and features evocative vocals, culminating in layered flutes and whistles, somewhat reminiscent of The Clangers.

Lead single, “Your Gods” examines female persecution and righteous female anger. The song was inspired by pagan religions, the Scottish witch trials, online “witch hunts” and several news articles about male Trump supporters persecuting women wearing Hijabs’, days after Trump’s election.

The EP ends on “Old Christine”, an acoustic folk song about a wind witch in the North West of Scotland. In Scottish folklore, if there was bad weather, sailors would pay a wind witch to cast a spell and create favourable sailing conditions.

A more stripped back offering than her previous 2 EP’s, and more in line with her live show, Luna Neptune discussed her reason for producing the EP:

“In a time when politicians consistently misuse the term ‘witch hunt’ to avoid personal accountability; the online backlash to the #MeToo movement, and continued attacks on womxn’s spiritual and social freedoms, it felt like the right time to record a collection of songs inspired by witches. These songs have been brewing for the last few years, and have taken different forms along the way, but it felt right and proper to record fairly stripped back versions of the songs – exposing the heart of the lyrics. Whilst each song references the past, each has helped me process the constant political shit storm we are currently navigating. Perhaps it’s time to call in our own wind witches to see us through this maelstrom.”
