INTERVIEW: Tevan

Hi Tevan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey there, I been really good. Just been buzzing over the release and am truly excited for what the future holds!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Anyway”?

This is my debut single and a project that I am truly excited to share with the world. With the inter-twining of afro swing elements whilst paying homage to my own heritage (Indian tabla in the beat), we have created a unique sound. Good energies and great vibes is how I choose to live my life and this song is a complete representation of that and more.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I don’t believe in a single event being so defining that a whole song is based around it. But what I do believe in, is that a collections of events may have occurred and lead me to write this song. At that specific time in my life, a couple things had occurred which influenced me and my perception. Love can be a heavy rollercoaster at times, but it’s up to us, to pick ourselves up and better ourselves in any way!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Definitely! The video is in fact out now on GRM Daily. The video is directed by Eric Myers and he knew the vision for the song from the get go. It was a completely different experience for me, and I definitely enjoyed every single moment of it. From the lighting to the i8, everything was simply stellar. A huge shoutout for mediaworkx, without them none of this would have been possible!

How was the recording and writing process?

Patrick Osei and I knew the sound we wanted to go for, its something that hasn’t been heard before. We wanted to create a completely different vibe. Patrick produced the beat and I was there whilst it was all going down and all I can say is, there was a proper aura in the camp that day. Furthermore, to have JoJo collab and put his touch on the track in the way he did, it was all just too wavey.

The song was written in literally two hours, Sunaree and TW, along with me and Patrick, wrote a complete banger that day.

What role does Croydon play in your music?

For so many years Croydon has been shed under such negative light in the media. But I say it proudly that this is where I have been bought up and raised. The sound coming from Croydon has evolved in so many ways overs the years and it is inspirational see so many local acts doing so well in the UK and internationally. I can’t wait to be a part of it

How your upbringing has influence your writing?

A lot. My parents, coming from Sri Lanka, worked incredibly hard in order to try and better me and my brothers’ life. That same work ethic shown by my parents is instilled within me till this day, and that is what really made me go and pursue my dreams and make music. Currently, I’m 21 years old, and it feels like the world is my oyster, I can’t wait to experience new challenges and further develop as an artist.

How Drake and N.E.R.D. has influence your music?

I listen to their music regularly, so a lot! They are so great at releasing crazy catchy melodies, from a songwriting perspective I take a lot of inspiration from them. Personally, as an artist I want to develop and venture into different sounds. The evolution of Drake serves as an inspiration to me and shows the heights that can be reached!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

When I’m not in the studio, I’m always writing. In fact, if you check my iPhone, I have hundreds of voice notes of potential ideas and melodies. So yes haha, definitely there will be tons of new material released this year and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

It’s all a work in progress at the moment.

Any plans to hit the road?

Once “Anyway” is fully recognised by my audience, I will definitely take the next step by hitting the road and showcasing my talents to a live audience.

What else is happening next in Tevan’s world?

Will be looking to finalise my next single, honestly cannot wait to show the world all the different vibes we been working. Also will be venturing into some new exciting projects so keep an eye out!
