Alt-R&B artist sobhhï has unveiled a new EP, BLACK I. Prefaced by the single facts up, the 4-track project is out in full today, including new tracks: sometimes, 4am in Riyadhand pust caf. The new EP is sobhhï’s most polished and cohesive project to date, signalling artistic growth that should cement his status as one of the most innovative talents emerging from the increasingly crowded alt-R&B scene in recent memory.
On BLACK I, sobhhï focuses on the theme of nocturnalism, crooning about his late night pursuits throughout the EP. Aesthetically the project sits in the sweet-spot of bedroom soul and trap, resulting in a self-stylized brand of Trapsoul Nocturnalthat best describes sobhhi’s music.
sobhhï serenades a love interest throughout the EP, addressing her directly throughout 4 tracks that flow together seamlessly. The conversational tone that sobhhï adoptsgives the project a profoundly intimate feel, intriguing the listener from the initial female vocal sample on the focus single, facts up. The production throughout the EP is noticeably stripped back compared to some of sobhhi’s earlier work, often revolving around a sparse synth chord or a guitar lick, over minimalist 808s. The open space in the production allows sobhhi’s alluring vocals to take center stage, showcasing an impressive falsetto and letting his vulnerability shine through on each song. sobhhï shared some words about the project:
“I wanted to create an experience of night time and nocturnalism through the music; to experience something moving, extremely visceral; romantic, sensual, and dangerous… I would consider the BLACK series of EPs to be my most essential work, this is only the introduction”
In addition to BLACK I, sobhhï has also launched a label and clothing line – NUIT SANS FIN(“night without end”) – which will be the home for all of his releases moving forward.
BLACK I was produced entirely by sobhhï himself. Mastering was handled by Mike Bozzi (9x Grammy-nominated mastering engineer, for his work with Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Post Malone among others). With 3 more color-themed EPs scheduled for release this year, sobhhï is well positioned to firmly establish himself as one of the most promising up-and-comers in alternative R&B and a name to watch throughout 2019.
