INTERVIEW: Dusty Stragglers

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Good Thank You, very busy preparing to release the new E.P and recording and writing

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Strange Neighbours”?

Strange Neighbours was all about life on a council estate dealing with the fact were all living on top of each other like rats in a maze so we have to deal with personalities and characters we wouldn’t necessarily surround ourselves with,  most  of us can’t afford much so a “social” is just a house party but that can draw the wrong attention, when its good its great when its bad…its awful.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

yeah for me it was a cross between two memories, one of the estate i grew up on as a kid and the other was the parties brother Flabz used to hold would always get out of hand i don’t think I’ve found a way to go to his place an not embarrass myself  yet.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was great Jimmy Chiba directed and shot the video he’s amazing at what he does he knew the shots he wanted and how he wanted it to go down when moving from room to room, it was up to us to think of what would work with the props that we had and create an unusual or odd vibe for each room.

It was a fun nights shooting the process was really enjoyable which were so grateful for as some video shoots can grow to be tedious if your dealing with a lot of testing elements like having the wrong lighting or having issues with location.

How was the recording and writing process?

Peter Coates of  “Under The Bed Productions” would finish a beat he thought suited our sound and would email all of us, we would listen to the track and who ever got the first verse down was usually who we followed for subject matter.

We would record rough to make sure the content worked from rapper to rapper when passing over the verse to the next guy, and then go back and polish the track by re-recording it in one smooth take a lot of bars were also written on the spot and thrown in if it worked and experiment as we went along.

What role does the UK play in your music?

I cant speak for all the boys on the this one but for me…. there’s so much I love about our country but a lot of the time the poorer sides of society don’t see the positives, we see the positives in the community around us not in the government that run our country not in the other sides of society that openly look down they’re nose at us.

we are the bi-product of the thatcher era we grew up on weird estates or by baron land with bombed out an stolen cars an peds kids selling all kinds adults selling to kids…it wasn’t positive it took us growing up and pushing forward to understand and it became a big part of our sound an subject matter, so i guess to me Britain’s role in what i write is always displaying the positives of human interaction and the wedge our system drives between understanding and success.

A lot people live on the cusp of poverty working a full time job if they stop for a second it could prove fatal, lose your job lose your house but the tax man’s paid an were taught that’s all that matters not your health not your family but money thats the main thing i have accepted from the day i was born here, it’s what dictates our surroundings and our health and i guess its what fuels my content when speaking about Britain.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

Yes absolutely subject matter, content and delivery always changes to fit the mood of the track if it’s someone else track i will always write to fit the mood they have set and follow the subject they have wrote about and my metaphors will reflect that.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yeah as i mentioned earlier we have the new E.P ready we just finishing the final touches to it we can’t wait to bring it to you guys this particular E.P has a slightly darker feel to it and the beats are harder, the subject matter is more refined were only getting better!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not as of yet were in the middle of deciding that, the release date will more than likely be between the middle to end of March we will announce the release date and title at the beginning of next month.

Any plans to hit the road?

Of course were in talks with several promoters/venues at the moment planning a UK tour and some venues/promoters abroad in Spain, Holland and Germany were definitely heading out to Europe and had people in Australia, New Zealand and Canada ask if we would ever pass through which we will!

What else is happening next in Dusty Stragglers’ world?

We will be getting out there and gigging as well as getting the new videos artwork and everything else ready for the new E.P and getting back in recording and writing we all have solo projects ready to go also so there’s no shortage of work to be done!
