INTERVIEW: Leon Markcus

Hi Leon, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello VENTS thank you for having me! **Virtual Hug** I’ve been really busy and stressed up about the release of my Single! I’m hoping people would be alright with the Single, cause as ya know, Singapore is still slightly conservative and i thought that my newer content might be a little too provocative for them! It’s just me and my constant paranoia haha.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Started”?

Well, basically ‘SXW’ was written back in 2016, around the time my debut E.P Mannequin came out. I had this idea of a sophomore E.P that is a little more aggressive as compared to my debut. SXW is actually an abbreviation for ‘Sex Wolves’ which basically highlights the bad side of online dating where many individuals are just superficial beings looking to fulfill their temporary sexual needs with no intention of settling down even if they might come across that way. And my verses kinda alludes that idea to my listeners “Hidden bhind these trees are wolves, so please now red (a nod to red riding hood) dont be fooled” “or “it didn’t seem they’ll hurt a soul, but instead spins thread to gold (another nod to rumplestiltskin from OUAT) Basically, telling the listeners that Sex wolves are devious and cunning creatures who will do whatever it takes to satisfy that need for sexual release.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Actually, yes! I myself have tried my hands on online dating and alot of my encounters online are people who are generally just looking to have sex (not that it is a bad thing) but it is kinda sad for people who are actually serious in looking for a life partner aint it? Heck, sometimes, even my DMs are filled with “friends” looking to get to know me or in their words have fun with no strings attached.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Well, a full length video is in the works and discussion. But nothing is really concretely planned out. That is only because i have this crazy idea of a music video that i really wanna excute but unless i am able to get the quality im looking for, i would much rather pass on making one as the quality of my work is number one. With that being said, i did release a short lyric clip that i actually animated, edited and filmed on my own that I am really proud of. And since, i was speaking about how online dating is like a game to SXW, why not actually be inspired by a game and i chose pokemon. Go see my lyric clip, it took me ages to do.

How was the recording and writing process?

SXW was probably the fastest song i have written, recorded and produced. That is because the final product was already in my head before beginning to work on it. I knew what melodies i wanted, what vocal samples it needed and how the entire vibe of the song was gon go. I think the greatest part of this all was finding the right feature for the track, we went through many rappers but eventually decided on two Kotic Couture and another but the second rapper pulled out last minute and i think that was probably a good thing because, Kotic absolutely killed it hard. I think the song is best fitted for a single feature and I am gald it is Kotic. I absolutely love this queen.

What role does Singapore play in your music?

A huge role to be honest, as much as america have shaped my music influences, living and being in the east or Singapore shaped my lyrical content. I write alot about issues faced here in Singapore or being raised as in strict asian household.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

Yes. I just leave the Collaborators with the track and ask them to flourish and do whatever they want. I dont wanna limit them by enforcing a set of guidelines. Moreover, i work with people that i feel like i can vibe with. So you might have thousands of followers but if we cant vibe well, i dont think i will be working with you anytime soon. Hahaha

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes, I am actually in the studio right now working on more music. Probably a Sophomore E.P? I dont know, it really depends on the reception of the Single. As you know, being an open bisexual non binary musician here is tough. Commercial corporations might not be as willing to support your work thus we really rely on the people to push our music ventures forward. But yes, i am working on new music that are bops as well as deeply emotional i hope.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not as of yet. But let’s say the record might be called ‘Welcome to Hot City’ taking a trip to the underside of Singapore without an actual plane ticket.

Any plans to hit the road?

Of course, i make playing shows a need but we gon have to see how the music does!

What else is happening next in Leon Markcus’ world?

Well, more music as well as me dabbling in acting a little and hopefully, I will get the opportunity to voice/write a song for a gem on Steven Universe or strike an audition as Zuko from Avatar the last Airbender on Netflix (This is me asking Hahahah)
