Athens, GA, glam pop artist, Nicholas Mallis, has just announced his new album, Artificial Irrelevance and released the opening track, “Habitable World.” The song is equipped with a tight dance/punk beat, punchy bass line, swirling synths, and an angular surf rock riff. Mallis leads the stomp with his Bowie-esque croon, asking perennial questions about life beyond the third rock.
About the song, Mallis comments:
“This song entertains the idea that we all have alien twins out there in the universe, watching us from afar. My twin is probably wondering why I spend so much time starting at a screen. The recording process usually takes a while for me and involves a lot of trial and (mostly)error, but Habitable World came together in a few days. I started with the bassline and quickly built everything around that. With the production and instrumentation, I was mostly influenced by ‘70’s art pop and glam rock. I really love how the bass pops out in those older recordings and tried to channel that with a lot of the songs on the new album.”
Nicholas has held down a low-key tenure in Athens for years, playing in bands like Viking Progress, Sam Sniper, Yo Soybean, and even backing for local legends Cindy Wilson and Fred Schneider (B-52’s). His previous recordings and absurdist, over the top performances have been garnering him praise in Athens since 2015, and Flagpole Magazine places him “among the town’s best songwriters.” In 2015, he released his first solo effort, Golden Age Vanity, followed by the reverb soaked, Hobby Lobbyist in 2016.
The upcoming release was recorded at Nicholas’ home studio in Athens and mastered at The Glow by engineer/producer Jesse Mangum(Elf Power, Black Kids, Deep State). Artificial Irrelevance will be out on April 9 on the Athens record label, Laser Brains (Tedo Stone, Hank Sullivant (MGMT), Shehehe, Drew Beskin, Velveteen Pink, etc.) and Mallis and his backing band, The Borealis will be touring the eastern US along with the release.
