INTERVIEW: Icy Lando

Hi Icy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi Vents. I have been good, thanks so much for having me.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pull Up”?

“Pull Up” is my first release as a solo artist . The single was produced by Czech producer Daysix who I met during my time with the boys choir. It is a hardcore type of old school HipHop record similar to what rappers like snoop dogg used to do back in the day.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes. In fact a lot of events. I grew up in tough circumstances in Kayole, a neighborhood in Nairobi that really is not a nice place to be honest. The record talks of how I have managed to overcome all of the challenges to be living a good life.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes of course! I hope Vents Magazine would premiere it. It is amazing. I will drop it very soon too.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was amazing. I grew up listening to rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne who really love using hardcore beats, and I always wanted to record music like that one day. And that’s where Daysix is really good at. He sent me a couple of hot beats and when I listened to this Pull Up beat, I knew this was the one. It didn’t take long to write it. I had it done within 20 minutes.

What role does Kenya play in your music?

Kenyans love to have fun. And that is whats in my music and Kenyan music. Fun. I want to people to forget all their problems when they listen to my music.

How your background has the boys choir has influence your writing?

It has influenced my writing as well as producing. The Boys Choir is not just any choir, we were very entertaining, we were something else. You should check out the performances on YouTube. That influenced me because I want to be that type of artist who is seen as an entertainer, ready to bring the house down.

How do you go on blending Grimes with old school hip-hop?

Stormzy and Big Shaq are really popular in Kenya and I listen to them a lot. As well as Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne. I think every artist has a little bit of influence on who they listen to and I think listening to Grime and Old School Hip Hop helps me be able to write music with that particular sound.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes. “Pull Up” is just the beginning. My new track is coming out in late February featuring an upcoming wonderful Pop singer from Australia Sire. That guy really sings, you will love it. It has been produced by a London based producer N-Geezy.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The release date is February 22nd, The title is a surprise.

Any plans to hit the road?

I am hoping to Tour the UK and Europe this coming Summer. I working on that with my booking agent on having that done successfully.

What else is happening next in Icy Lando’s world?

Nothing else other than music haha! I think of music 24/7 everyday.
