INTERVIEW: Box of Moxie
How would you classify your music?
Alternative Rock, Folksy, Americana.
Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Warren Zevon.
What do you want fans to take from your music?
It’s usually about Inspiration. If there’s love, Music, or anything else, simply do what you love and Believe in. That the components of the end result song itself is not the work of one person. Those who helped with the recordings or influenced you along the way played a major part in your journey as well.
How’s the music scene in your locale?
A vibrant scene in both Richmond & Charlottesville, Virginia, Both University towns with an eclectic array of both local and national acts & Producers such as Alan Weatherhead (The Cardigans, Cracker, Sparklehorse, Hotel Lights, Magnolia Electric Co.) and a superb underground scene.
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
Eric Clapton, Anders Osborne & Stevie Ray Vaughan would rate as a few of my favorite Concerts. Playing “live” always portrays a full picture of musician themselves and always the great connection made with the audience; always great for feedback and always a way to stay on top of your game.
Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?
“Hatteras Surf Buzz” as surfing was good fun in my youth. This song also evokes a concentration and confidence in itself, a restrained feeling, whereby the guitar riffs could’ve taken off in a big way; but it’s a tune that stays focused, with an even keel vibe not dissimilar to the precision and control of the surfers themselves, also refreshing real-life lyrics- truly evoking the life of the surfer.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?
This new Release “submission admission” and currently “salt water magic” were recorded and thought out over many months with great production. I’ve evolved through what I would say is the best of 7 years of songwriting, always improving at my craft and hopefully others will enjoy the results in some way.
If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
It’s a 3 way tie: Jerry Garcia & Stevie Ray Vaughan & Mark Linkous.
What’s next for you?
Finishing up “Salt Water Magic” for early Spring Release. A West Coast Radio Station Tour in Late February will following that.
Hi James, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? Hello! Fair to middling I guess …
