Raquel Bell Premieres “Who Gets To Name The Name” Video

Raquel Bell is an experimental/pop musician, dancer, and visual artist based in Los Angeles. She has been described as “something of a polymath,” by Stereo Embers, “[who] applies her virtuosity to whatever discipline strikes a nerve.”

Today Bell has released a video for “Who Gets To Name The Name” — a track off of her latest full length album, SWANDALA (rel. July 2018). The song melds the strange, ethereal vocal style of Kate Bush with an almost honky tonk-like waltz. PopMatters calls her “an undeniably remarkable vocalist… [whose] music is rife with imaginative, almost childlike passages that are both charming and alarming.”

In the video, premiering today at Atwood Magazine, choreographer Leyya Tawil dances through a room in which vibrant red strawberries have been strung up from the ceiling. The strawberries — the perfect, sweet, and magical juicy fruit — symbolize the ideologies that were brought forth to us as children, in any country. It was directed by Yuan Liu and Russell Lee Cramer of Eye Roll Pictures. “As we go through life… we alter and change the scale of the environment that we feel responsible for. What is worse?” Liu asks, “Ignorance? Illusion of knowledge? Ideology? Or a “just” war?”
