Andrew Fox Announces Debut Album ‘Shock by Shock’

On Shock by Shock, his forthcoming debut album, NYC-based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Andrew Fox explores the question: What is America beyond a place on the map?

Watch/Listen to: “Shock by Shock”

Enlisting a wide community of collaborators, Fox has created a road trip through the American psyche, traversing musical landscapes from coast to coast. Shock by Shock reimagines vintage psychedelic soul and pop influences, creating a distinctly timeless and cinematic album full of romance, humor, and grooves.

With lush, sunshine-y textures, the title track is a tiny symphony in the vein of Phil Spector or Shuggie Otis, inflected with a contemporary urgency. Drawing its title from Texas surrealist poet Dean Young, “Shock by Shock” is a love song and a rallying cry; the heart and soul of Fox’s forthcoming LP.

It is the sound of many people, and an embrace of community. Contributions from longtime collaborator Dave Harrington (DARKSIDE), drummer Nick Kinsey (Kevin Morby), saxophonist Danny Meyer (Julia Holter, Chairlift), and singer Ang Low elevate the song to transcendent highs. With warm, meticulous, and organic production, Fox creates a dreamlike atmosphere, reminding us to “rock it through / day by day / shock by shock.”

The ‘Official Live Lyric Video’ was shot and directed by Jordan Taylor Fuller, and co-produced with Fox. It includes footage from an early performance at C’mon Everybody in Brooklyn, where Fox is joined by Attis Jerrell Clopton, Ang Low, and Taryn Blake Miller (Your Friend). It was expertly manipulated by Fuller into psychedelic, karaoke bliss, featuring contributions from animator Chen Longo. “I wanted the video to be functional,” says Fox, “and simultaneously surreal.”

Shock by Shock will be released on March 21. Andrew Fox will perform at Union Pool in Brooklyn on February 8.
