Fresh off experimenting in hip-hop in 2018, New Jersey singer-songwriter Matty Carlock is ushering in the new year with another phase, announcing his debut full-length The Jailbirds, to be released February 8, 2019. Kicking things off is the raw and anthemic“Young and Fucked Up” featuring Jesse Malin, with a video premiere via Billboard. A cult favorite, Malin is perhaps best known as the frontman for hardcore band Heart Attack, lead singer for D Generation and has worked with Bruce Springsteen and Green Day over a career spawning over four decades. The Jailbirds also features collaborations with Jared Hart and another surprising guest: celebrity photographer Danny Clinch, in his first musical foray.
Matty Carlock has long been maintaining parallel (and now, overlapping) presences in hip-hop, hardcore, and Americana; the multi-faceted, former behind-the-scenes writer and producer for upcoming rappers Albee Al and Bulletproof Belv and onetime frontman of Shai Hulud now pays homage to his roots with a rock-centric approach on this release. Calling to mind the down-to-earth and inspiring urgency of hometown hero Bruce Springsteen, The Jailbirds takes expectations and turns them on their heads. Matty Carlock’s musical career may seem like a bit of everything, but what ties it all together is the undeniable passion behind the songs.
