INTERVIEW: JAAK

Hi JAAK, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! Thank you for talking to us about the single, we are so excited to have you be apart of this.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Think About It”?

“I Think About it” is kind of my take on what it feels like to face love again after experiencing heartbreak. It speaks to the amount of uncertainty anyone feels after being hurt by someone and I think even just writing the song and listening to it myself that is helps me accept my own feelings in my own love life.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

As my first release Entitled Pt. 1 EP tells my story of picking up the pieces of my life after the end of what I thought would be a life long relationship, “I Think About It” carries the story forward. I think anyone who has gone through a bad break up can relate to being scared to move on and to make the same mistake in picking the wrong person; I feel “I Think About It” captures that moment when you decide to let go and try to love again and how delicate those moments can be in our lives.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We are really excited to announce there will be a video for the single and fans can expect it very soon. So be sure to keep up-to-date on social media and our website!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was so organic, and I worked with incredible people while writing it. Andrew Bontempo and I wrote the lyrics and the melody acoustically where we had Dan Borgers my lead producer create the track. As an LGBTQ artist, it can feel uncomfortable sometimes to talk about your love life with straight people, men nonetheless, and I think it’s incredible how Dan and Andrew were able to create such a safe space for me as an artist. Writing and recording is personal and it’s important to know the authentic details behind the song and no matter how personal the topics became the three of us were able to turn those emotions into raw, impactful music.

How does your upbringing influence your writing?

Growing up we moved around almost every other year up until I was in high school. I think constantly moving and having to readjust I found music was a stable thing for me to hold on to and it has now become a diary of my life. I grew up listening to my parent’s favourite Celine Dion and Whitney Houston which is what started my interest in R&B and soul music. Writing and performance wise Mariah Carey & Beyoncé have impacted and inspired my music the greatest and both of their careers is what I dreamed of having when I was younger.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material? – How’s that coming along?

The new single is just a pre-show of what is to come. As there is a part one to my EP series Entitled, “I Think About It” is really the first single of a bigger project that will continue the story of the struggles and triumphs of re-finding love. As “Entitled Pt. 1 EP” was a four-song record, we wanted to share more of this story by making our next release Entitled Pt. 2 EP a six-song record. We think the music is bolder and bigger than ever and I can’t wait for people to hear the new JAAK.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We can expect Entitled Pt. 2 EP end of February, with more visual content to accompany the music.

Any plans to hit the road?

The road is something my team and I are working on now. As we finish the last of this project, we are so excited to go out and connect with our fans and put on a show!

What else is happening next in JAAK’s world?

My team and I are working on more videos, acoustic covers, and a few collabs with some amazing artist. 2019 is going to be a year of work and we are ready more than ever!
