How To Care For Your Dress Before And After The Prom

The process of picking the right prom dress is so difficult. So many different styles, colors, and materials are available which makes it hard for you to choose. Making your final decision is a cheerful moment for the girls. But, your job is not done only with the process of purchase. There are additional activities to make sure that your dress is all flawless and ready for the special evening. Read on and find out how to care for your dress before and after the prom!

Before The Prom

  • Store the receipt in case you need to make a complaint later. Prom dresses are not cheap and you have your rights as a customer in case of wrong size or damaged goods.

  • As soon as you get home, hang the dress so it will not get wrinkled. Use padded hangers for soft and delicate materials such as satin, silk, and chiffon. Check if there are hanger helpers on the inside. Manufacturers sew these on dresses, especially strapless models so you can hang it properly. If you can’t hang it, lay it flat.

  • If the dress has embellishments, make sure that they are not touching other items. This way, you will protect the delicate detailing from damage.

  • If wrinkles appear, bring the dress for steaming. Or, you can do it yourself by hanging the dress in the bathroom after showering. The steam will do the trick.

During The Prom

Dining, drinking and dancing all night long means that your dress will not stay spotless. Having a few spots is not a big deal after all. Make sure that you have a spot cleaning product in your purse, so you can act immediately. If left, the spills can be absorbed in the material and it will be more difficult to remove them later.

After The Prom

When the night is over, all you are left with are the memories and the dress. The purchase is considered an investment, and you can use your dress for other occasions too. To make sure that it stays in perfect shape, follow these tips:

  • Before you store the dress, make sure that it is clean. Leave it to professionals and take it to the dry cleaning service.

  • If you find dry cleaning too expensive, then you can just wash the dress by yourself. Use mild soap in the process. For drying, lay it flat on a towel. Only store when completely dry.

  • Store your dress in a garment bag to make sure that it stays in good shape. Buy a special one for plus size prom dresses.

  • Add a bag of lavender to keep the moths away.

  • Store in a cool and dry place. Hot temperatures can break down the fibers, and the humidity can allow development of mold. Do not expose to direct sunlight, as it can cause decoloration.
