INTERVIEW: Preston

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “About To Go Off”?

I’m generally a pretty upbeat guy and I’m not into making people feel down with my music. I want people to hear it and get pumped, excited and put them in a good mood.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

I play high-level basketball and one of my teammates asked me to write a song that would help us get psyched before a big game.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There is one on YouTube now. It has about 34,000 views so far. It has some pretty dope scenes of Toronto. You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYmTrgQnSUY.

How was the recording and writing process?

Like any music it just takes time, man. I’m kind of a perfectionist so I don’t want to put anything out that I don’t feel is ready. I just keep tweaking until it’s right. Ya feel me?

Blending trap and hip hop – how do you go on balancing both genres in a way where you don’t get lost in the mumbling and get your message heard loud and clear?

I try not to get influenced by anyone else. I stay in my own lane.

Any plans to hit the road?

I just had a performance at Toronto’s Museum of Contemporary Art. I recently had knee surgery so just now trying to get out again. Have any suggestions?

What is happening next in Preston’s world?

I’m working on another track right now with that’s got some more vocals and collaborating with another artist. I’m just going to keep on grinding. It’s my dream. It’s gotta happen.
