INTERVIEW: The Backpack Kid

Hi Russell, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been pretty good. Thank you for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Drip on Boat”?

Drip The Boat is a banger made by me and Swaghollywood. It’s just over 3 minutes long and the music video is coming soon.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I wouldn’t say there was any specific moments that made me want to write this song but it is all about the drip, ya know!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, the video comes out on the 19th.

The single comes off your new album SwagBack Kid – what’s the story behind the title?

The name of e EP is pretty simple. Let me break it down. So there is Swaghollywood, he is on a couple songs on the EP, and then there is Backpack Kid. And if you mix them together it’s SwagBack Kid.

How was the recording and writing process?

Me and Swaghollywood didn’t really write that song, we just kind of vibed with it and talked into the mic until we got our flow… and then we made a banger.

How Lil Yachty has influence your writing?

Lil Yachty introduced me to hip hip in 2016 when he dropped his album Lil Boat, it had a happy vibe to it. And me, I am a very happy person so listening to this happy music made me realize how happy I really am and how much I loved hip hop. So ever since then I always wanted to make happy music.

Lil Yachty really influences my music because he introduced me to the happy vibe of trap music. And I really like that type of vibe because I am a happy person myself. Ever since then, I just wanted to make happy music.

As you archive pretty much instant success – does that put any pressure on you as you release new material or rather the opposite?  How much unexpected did the success still feels for you?

I definitely want to thank all of my supporters out there for helping me come as far as I have. It is very unexpected and pretty crazy.

Can fans expect a new side from you and few surprises on this material?

Yes, sooner or later you will see a whole new Backpack Kid

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Most of my inspiration came from Lil Yachty. Since I heard his happy music, I have always made happy music.

Any plans to hit the road?

At the moment I do not have any plans to go on tour but I would love to sometime soon. 2019 is going to be a big year so keep following me.

What else is happening next in The Backpack Kid’s world?

What’s next for Backpack Kid is music and acting. I want to see myself on the big screen.
