[Kay Fuego] We’ve been great, thanks for asking! We’ve really just been focusing on pushing our new single.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Awake”?
[Astro] ‘Awake’ is our 3rd released single. It’s a very energetic, upbeat song in which me and Kay go back to back in. We released it on Halloween just to give it even more of a mysterious vibe!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
[Kay Fuego] I wouldn’t say an event inspired this song – it was more the constant pressures of bills and worrying about getting through the months while having financial freedom is something all of us can relate to. Money problems will have you up like an insomniac!
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
[Astro] We contacted a videographer via instagram (Theo Blackledge) and pitched him the idea I had to shoot and edit the video for this song – he lives in Manchester so we traveled down there a couple weeks later. Me and Kay decided to look online for abandoned places. We found an abandoned mental asylum. We wanted to give it a scary, aggressive vibe with a lot of energy. The props we used was a masked doll and money which enhanced the vibe of the song and brought it alive. We shot for 8 hours straight exploring the abandoned mental asylum while doing a lot of different, wild stuff.
How was the recording and writing process?
[Kay Fuego] We recorded it when we were out in LA. We wanted a song in which we could put all our energy into while performing. At first, we just freestyled and then later refined the lyrics.
How has your upbringing has influence your writing?
[Kay Fuego] My father always used to play all types of music around me – ranging from artists like The Lighthouse Family all the way to Ninjaman! I’ve had an interest in so many different types of music, it’s definitely shaped me as an artist and is the reason why I like to experiment with new styles and sounds.
[Astro] In our summer holidays, me and my sister used to create music using our minds and any instrument we could find at home. We vibed off each other, she was the singer and I was the rapper. She used to actually write lyrics that came to her naturally and I was inspired. It was from watching my sister I learnt how to write lyrics.
What role does London play in your music?
[Astro] Growing up in London inspired our fashion and just the whole london culture has already inspired the rest of the country whether it be our slang or fashion choices!
What is it about the 80s and 90s that you find so fascinating?
[Kay Fuego] These were the times where Hip-Hop was evolving at such a fast rate – it went from storytelling artists like Slick Rick in the 80’s, all the way to ‘Gangster Rap’ from the likes of NWA and Snoop Dogg etc. The way instrumentals were produced fascinates me because it’s so different to how we do it now – back then it was a lot more complicated!
Known for playing with different genres – how do you go on balancing them together?
[Astro] It comes natural to us since we’ve grown up listening to a variety of music, styles and genres.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
[Kay Fuego] Most definitely, we’re constantly working on putting together new music and brainstorming ideas on music videos. So far we’ve got a few finished songs in the works and are deciding on how and when we should release them.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
[Astro] No, we are currently only focused on just making a lot of music.
Any plans to hit the road?
[Kay Fuego] Definitely, once we put together and release enough material and grow our fanbase, we’re planning on doing shows and touring as much as possible! We can’t wait for everyone to experience our energy in real life.
What else is happening next in your world?
[Astro] Just a lot more great music for our fans and people to enjoy!
