Can you talk to us more about your latest single “cold/mess”?
It’s actually not a single and it’s not new. I released an ep a few months ago titled cold/mess and we just released a music video for the title track.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not any particular event really, more like a series of experiences over the past 2/3 years.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Very intense. It was a 5 day shoot and we shot the whole video (except the underwater shots) on 16mm film. Shooting on film can get quite challenging cause you don’t have play back and you have limited film so one has to plan everything meticulously and there also isn’t a lot of room for re-takes.
Why naming the record after this song in particular?
cold/mess is like the culmination of all the feelings associated with the other songs on the record. Each song has a place in the narrative of the record and cold/mess particularly is kinda like the peak of it all.
How was the recording and writing process?
Quite intense as well. The record was produced and recorded in Nashville and then mixed in New York. It was around January earlier this, just when the big winter storm hit so it was actually quite crazy cause we had flight delays and what not lol. Once we were all actually in the studio though it was super fun!
What was it like to work with Konrad Snyder and how did that relationship develop?’
I worked with two producers- Konrad Snyder and Peter Groenwald. We wrote a few songs together last year in the summer and the three of us really vibed- so I asked them to jump on board as producers on the record. They’re both insanely talented and brought so much to the sound of the record.
How much did he get to influence the album?
One of the songs in cold/mess ep – with you/for you – was written by all three of us last summer. Other than that both Peter and Konrad really helped in shaping the sound of cold/mess and making it sound how it did.
How your upbringing has influence your music?
I’m not quite sure if it has that much – I learned to play the guitar in high school but I think for me the turning point of becoming a songwriter happened during my time in New York in college. I was in love – with a girl and with the city – and I think it really changed me in a lot of good ways.
What role does Nashville play in your music?
To be honest not a lot other than the fact that cold/mess was produced there – I have never lived in the city only passed through there for work from time to time.
Does your approach tends to change when you are writing a song in your mother language rather than in English?
Not really no.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
My personal and intimate experiences and feelings.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We’re going on tour through a bunch of cities next year in March and April through North America. You can find all info on prateekkuhad.com/tour
What else is happening next in Prateek Kuhad’s world?
Not much other than everything I said above lol. Just put this music video out and it’s done well – so I’m happy about that. Other than that prepping for touring!
