Can you talk to us more about your latest single “FACE PNCH”?
We recently released “FACE PNCH” and so far have received great feedback on it! I’m super excited about this song and hope that it continues to reach more and more people.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
There wasn’t a specific event as much as a specific mood that inspired this song. I was in a love/hate relationship with myself at that time and my way of coping was to write about it.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
There is definitely a video for “FACE PNCH” in the works! Music videos are so fun and I can’t wait to get going on this one!
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote and recorded this song with Jimmy Messer (producer and owner of Parts + Labor Records). It was super fun to make this track with him. He came up with this super cool guitar part that I wrote to. We really shaped the rest of the song around that bit, which I think is what makes the song so cool.
What was it like to work with Jimmy Messer and how did that relationship develop?
I love working with Jimmy. I started interning for him when I was 20 and got to know his process throughout that time. When I was 23 I showed him a couple songs and he really liked them. From then on our relationship has evolved into a collaborative one and it’s been awesome to have the opportunity to work with him in the studio. He is incredibly talented and I feel very lucky to have partnered up with him and Parts + Labor Records.
How much did he get to influence the song?
We wrote the song together so we share equal parts in making “FACE PNCH.”
What role does LA play in your music?
It is where I grew up and where I still live so it’s played a significant role. I am influenced by my environment and relationships, making LA the main source of my inspiration.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I am always writing! New material is always in the works and always on its way in some form. We have a couple of rad songs we are working on right now as well as some cool ones that are already recorded. Would love to release some new music soon!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No release dates yet. I have to decide which song I want to put out first.
What aspect of your life will you be exploring on this record?
The theme seems to be growing pains. Just navigating life as a woman in your twenties. A lot of new experiences and a lot of growth happens and is continuing to. I am sharing my experiences and my reaction to them. As fun as it is to be in your twenties, it’s also really effing hard.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! Definitely plans to hit the road, still working out the dates.
What else is happening next in Mad Hawkes’ world?
I am excited to get going on the music video for “FACE PNCH!” And to continue to release more songs!
