LA’s Sophie Strauss has just released her stunningly shot video for “Sweetboy“ out today via Adolescent. Director Hana Haley captures the theme of raw play between voyeurism and unapologetic sexuality that Sophie exudes. Of the song Sophie explains, “It’s about knowing someone or something may be bad for you but sometimes you just don’t care; you have to have them back (at least for a little bit) and that’s okay.” The lyrics over the chorus, “I’m gonna let you back in,” are sung against field-sampled sounds of domesticity and comfort—the percussion of clothes spinning in the dryer.
The politically active LA native just started a radical grassroots organization support committee called BY ASSOCIATION. Sophie’s music shines a light on the pressures of compartmentalization and expectations women experience every day in society. Juxtaposing lush synths against sharp, organic percussion and her intimate vocals, she brings you into her beautiful, tense world. She is strongly opinionated, girly, queer, shameless, self-deprecating and her songwriting is as comfortable with discomfort as she is. Her new album Hard Study, which is inspired by Sophie’s female lineage, is to be released on December 14th.
