Hi JJ, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great! I stay busy making music, hunting & working the land.

Can you talk to us more about your new songs, “Houndsman” and “My Favorite Band”?

Houndsman is a song that’s special to me, because there’s not really a bunch of songs that celebrate the act of hunting with dogs. It’s something I’ve loved since I was a kid and I still do. I made this song for the folks like me who are out there keeping the tradition alive. “Favorite Band” is a play on words. The hook is: my favorite band is on the webfoot in my hand.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write these songs?

There wasn’t an event in particular; what we are dealing with in this country now had something to do with me thinking: “Dang; nobody is ever gonna step out with the grit to speak their mind and support our rights to hunt or let folks know that it’s okay to celebrate our traditions and our way of life,” so I decided I would.

You recently released your new album, The Huntsman. Would you call this a conceptual record?

I wouldn’t call it a conceptual record, although it is in a way. Instead, I’d call it an American Classic. Hunting has always and will be apart of American heritage.

What role does Virginia play in your music?

Virginia has had a huge impact on my music and my life. It’s where I was born, raised and learned music; as well how to hunt, and how to be a man. No matter where I go or live, my home will always be in Virginia.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I have to give credit to The Lord for giving me strong ideas and song melodies. The inspiration for the songs and lyrics come from real life: stories, experiences and situations. That’s why I believe it’s authenticity translates. Folks know you aren’t making it up when you go into detail and speak their language in a way only someone who knows it can.

Any plans to hit the road?

I plan on hitting the road next year for sure! I love touring and performing. We get wild!

What else is happening next in JJ Lawhorn’s world?

What next? The Huntsman 2????
