I’ve been doing great! I’m actually on vacation right now, because my Fall Tour in NYC just wrapped. So I’m feeling super relaxed, and accomplished looking back on the tour and the release of my single “No Grey”.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No Grey”?
Yes! It’s definitely one of my favorites, if not, my favorite song that I’ve released thus far. The drumming beat, the empowering undertone; I just love it.
It’s the perfect reflection of where my sound is headed.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
Boy oh boy, yes (haha)! It was a situation-ship that ended up in probably my worst heartbreak. But I grew so much from it and became so empowered. It truly helped me mature and realize that it is my responsibility to set the boundaries in my life, in all of its facets.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
It was so much fun! 100% the easiest shoot I’ve ever done (no random mishaps). The cast was amazing and my team extremely helpful. The director, Stack Moses, and his team were 100% on the ball that day. Shooting it in my city, surrounded by such a gifted and supportive group of people, are what made the shoot so flawless.
How was the recording and writing process?
I’m going to repeat the word “amazing” so much for this interview (haha). It was an amazing and super easy experience. Some songs are tough to complete or require a lot of back and forth, but writing with YB, who co-penned the track, made it so seamless. He was able to take my experience and the lyrics that I did have, and perfectly help compose it, in a digestible form, for everyone to hear. The Drop0uts and Skywalkabeatz on production was a given token of success. They’re equally gifted as producers in their own right, so being able to have them produce this track was a blessing.
Needless to say, the energy was 100% right that day in the studio.
What role does New York play in your music?
It plays a big role. I always want to incorporate chunks of my upbringing and formation into the sty-lings that I choose to incorporate in my music. The Hip-Hop/Soul feel with the harmonies, song structure, and drum and bass, for example. That definitely is the foundation for all of the music I’ve done; The Bronx is fundamental.
But also the colorful and vibrant sounds of Spanish Harlem and Washington Heights that are a-tune to my cultural background. The classical influence from Hell’s Kitchen and the Upper East Side, that reflect my Operatic and overall Vocal Training, for example.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You sure can! I’m currently working on wrapping it up.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Both will have to be a surprise this time; sorry guys 🙂
What aspect of your life will you keep diving into this new record?
My love life for sure (haha), but also the empowered and fun aspects of my life and journey.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! Most definitely during the 1st half of 2019. Details are coming soon and I hope to see you there.
What else is happening next in Isa Marina’s world?
