Hi, thank you for having me! I have been so great. Busy busy and ready for the holiday season!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “You Do It”?
“You Do It” is a super fun one. I have lived a lot of my life single and have been happy with it, because I’ve been able to really focus on myself. This song embodies that girl, and then how her perspective changes once she meets someone that makes her want to live life alongside someone else.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I watched one of my close friends start dating somebody and become the kind of girl she used to make fun of; making cliche comments, always with that person, taking lots of cute photos together etc. One of my co-writers on this song had also started dating someone and totally related to this concept. It was the perfect song for that day!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I don’t have anything set at the moment, but would like to release a video in the new year.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote this song with some of my favorite ladies to write with in Nashville! It’s always great when you actually write well with your friends because it makes the whole process more fun. It was the first time the three of us had written together, and I’d say it was a successful session!
What role does LA and Nashville play in your music?
It’s a very exciting time for music in Nashville because it’s no longer just about Country music. There are so many different genres emerging in this town and SO many talented people. I make trips to LA pretty frequently so I find a lot of inspiration going back and forth. The differences in cultures helps provide a unique perspective.
How Julia Michaels and Dua Lipa has influence your writing?
I don’t know that they influence my writing as much as they influence my approach to writing. I think my style is a bit of a blend of both – honest and quirky lyrics like Julia, and big choruses that make you want to dance like Dua.
What is it about the 80s that you find so fascinating?
Just thinking about the 80’s makes me happy haha. I love the risks and experimental choices that were made in the 80’s, specifically musically. I actually just saw the movie Bohemian Rhapsody based on the band Queen, who I love, and it embodies so much of that. That era was so colorful and bold.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I have been working on lots of new material. I just played a show in Nashville a couple weeks ago and played several new songs. The response was awesome and I definitely want to release those. As of now, I am planning on putting out a couple more singles in the near future.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Nothing set, but there will be something new not too far into the new year.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m so excited because I’ve been working on my live show and definitely want to bring it to people in 2019!!
What else is happening next in Maddy Newton’s world?
New music, more shows, and potentially spending more time is Los Angeles. I love having a base in Nashville but also want to work in LA for a larger chunk of time. I think it’s so key for my creativity to have a presence in both places!
