Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Falling For You”?
Cody: Sure. It’s a songy song with a beat and a melody and words to sing along with. We went with a darker approach on the production side of things, both musically and visually, to do our best to connect the emotional space of the song with the listener.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Cody: I was just starting to talk to someone, you know – romantically, and had this feeling of “of fuck, not again”. Even though everything was going well there was this sort of turbulent undertone to the experience of getting to know them – knowing that usually these things end. So I wrote the song to try and capture that feeling and turn my woes into a little shareable computer file.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Cody: AMAZING. We had the best team ever working on the video. Everyone was excited, on their A-game, and contributing creatively at every moment. It was by far my favorite shoot I have ever been a part of. Being in the creature suit all day sucked, but I was so inspired by everyone else’s creativity that just watching things happen around me was so exhilarating it made me forget I was covered in silicon. Shout out to Normal Network and Crimson Hands SFX studios!
How was the recording and writing process?
Cody: The song was written in just a few hours, accidentally, on a couch at a family reunion. It was one of those that just came out really quickly and seemed to exist before I was lucky enough to tap into it. It was all written on a laptop, using the computer keyboard and mic to play/sing the notes on Garageband.
What role does St. Pete play in your music?
Cody: People here have been super welcoming and seem to dig what we do, so we were able to fall into the culture rather quickly. Although venues are starting to disappear (being taken over by fancy restaurants and jewelry stores) there are still enough that the local music scene is thriving. Shout out to Pleasures, Infinite Third, and Reality Asylum for playing kick ass local tunes!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Cody: Oh yes. Every month or so for the next year we will be releasing a new single along with video. Very excited about the new stuff. I hear it as being more pop-centric than anything we’ve done in the past while also spanning a wider range of emotion than we have done before.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?
Cody: If the opportunity is right, absolutely.
What else is happening next in King Complex’s world?
Cody: No ties. We don’t wear ties any more. Give us 10 more albums and we’ll be naked.
