Hi Brad, welcome back to VENTS! How have you been?
Great to be back guys, thanks for having me again! I’ve been well!
From all the songs out there, why did you choose to cover The Cure’s “Lovesong”?
I just heard the song one day! The simplicity of the arrangement and lyrics intrigued me to try and recreate it in a slowed down version. It’s a brilliant pop song, yet I felt it could live in another space.
Was this always intended to be the song to cover or you had another one from the band in mind?
I’ve always loved “Lullaby”, “A Forest”, “Pictures of You”, and “Disintegration”. However, “Lovesong” seemed like the most approachable in terms of its arrangement for me to cover properly.
How was the recording and re-writing process?
Pretty simple and painless…
What was the approach you went after with this song?
Bryan Cook (engineer/mixer – U2, Beck) really pushed me to record this at as slow of a tempo as possible. We wanted to display it in a Johnny Cash-esque way but with modern sensibilities.
Was it easy to tackle on this song?
Yeah, it really just flowed and came together quickly. My backing band played on the track as well and took it to a whole new level.
The song has another quite popular rendition by 311 – did you look at this particular version as well?
I actually never googled it, or had any idea until now that 311 had a version. I know Adele did a cover of it, but I haven’t heard that either 😉
Does the cover mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! I have a brand new full length album dropping in spring 2019 that I’m super excited about!
Any tentative release date or title in mind? Any plans to hit the road?
The new record is called “Phases” and yes there will be lots of touring in and around the release. Going to be a busy year!
What else is happening next in Brad Byrd’s world?
It’s never a dull moment, always something in the works! Keep an eye out for two new videos in the spring as well as leading up to the album’s release.
