Hello VENTS! So good, thank you! Just been making things and eating things!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “In The Deep”?
This single has definitely got more of a dance sensibility than some of my previous work, I wanted to find a sweet spot between pop and EDM. It’s a song about warmth and having no inhibitions, and I think dance music has this ability of elevating people to a place of euphoria and love.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It comes from those moments where your gaze keeps drifting over to someone, a complete stranger, and you can’t really explain why. Everyone has their own unique air about them and a presence that is catching. So the song is about that moment where you have this connection or attraction to someone you don’t know.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I have a lot of ideas for a video and hopefully we can pull one together! I had an amazing team I collaborated with on my last video for my single ‘Heartbreak Club’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwkiPl0WPVI). It was such a beautiful vibe on set and I’d really love to bring those people together again for the next one!
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing came very quickly, and it’s so awesome when that happens because, well sometimes it just doesn’t come that easy! I tried to find a balance where it was simple enough to memorize after the first listen, so you’re able to sing along with the chorus by the end, but still keep it interesting and engaging throughout. I think that’s something you have to practice in a genre that can be quite repetitive, to play with the song’s dynamics and subtleties.
How Tove Lo and Billie Eillish has influence your writing?
My girls! I found Billie a few years back on soundcloud, and I instantly connected with her songs. Coincidently we were making quite similar sounding music in terms of vocal arrangements. I’m obsessed with creating stacked vocals and using vocal layers in my production, and when I heard Billie’s songs, I was blown away by how she had mastered her vocal craft. I love the lilt in her delivery, and how you can hear this nostalgia and melancholy pour out of her. She just does her own thing and is an absolute boss at it. I have a crush on every Scandinavian person ever, and having grown up with my parents in an ABBA tribute band, I love Swedish writers and I think they write the most cleverly constructed pop. Tove Lo is so empowering to me, she’s always been an advocate for women and I look up to her so much as a producer too. Her songs are so listenable and easy on the ear, but you can hear how much work lies behind them too.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I really want to put my album out! I’ve got so many unreleased songs I’m aching to share, and hopefully the wait isn’t much longer. I have all these songs I’ve written over the past eight years, all snapshots of going through the most transformative time in my life as a teenager up to now. I’ve always imagined them being released as a unit, the songs all belong together and link to form this passage of my life.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The tentative goal is to have my album out early next year! No idea for an album title yet though!
Any plans to hit the road?
Performing is my favourite part of being a musician, and it’s been a bit of a quiet time for me in terms of gigs lately! I’m dying to do a tour around Australia, and hopefully organize some international shows.
What else is happening next in Jade Alice’s world?
I’m just going one step at a time, right now it’s focusing on ‘In The Deep’, but I have some collaborations coming out very very soon! Keep an eye out for my single with producer Motaki!
