I’ve been great thank you, just had a lovely summer gigging and surfing.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Southern Skies”?
Sure, one night whilst travelling around New Zealand, my girlfriend and I we were lying in our camper looking up at the stars the night before our adventure to Milford sound, ‘the 8th wonder of the world’. It was one of those inspirational moments that sparked the desire to begin writing the song.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Southern Skies is in part a love song, about escaping the parameters of normal life and embracing adventure.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not right now, if I were to make one I would want to film the footage back in New Zealand.
How was the recording and writing process?
For this track I decided to record the whole thing myself in my home studio. From the drums and guitars to the vocals it was all done from the comfort of my home. Having recorded my debut album with an engineer and producer in an amazing studio, I wanted to put the skills I’d learnt there into practice for a new single. I really enjoyed having full creative control and as much time as I needed to get everything just how I wanted it.
What role does the UK play in your music?
As I currently gig mainly in Cornwall, my inspiration is the laid-back lifestyle that comes with living in this amazing county. But I have some amazing supportive fans from around the UK.
How Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson has influenced your writing?
They are both fantastic artists. I was lucky enough to meet Jack Johnson once whilst surfing in Hawaii, so he has always been an inspiration in my music. I like to write happy music and then go and perform it to people where it has a positive influence on them and makes people smile. I feel both Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson do the same and I think that’s only a good thing.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I am always in the process of developing new material and am currently working on some new tunes however I do not have any current release dates. Last winter I took a musical hiatus to focus on some other interests however I am now back in full swing with my music career and continuing to be creative.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not the moment. But watch this space.
Any plans to hit the road?
I have just had a successful summer of live music gigs. Last year I had a few shows in London and I am hoping to do this again sometime soon and hopefully more around the UK. I would also love to do a festival tour next year.
What else is happening next in Nick Mears’ world?
Winter is usually my down time after a busy summer season. I am looking forward to a bit of travelling and jamming with friends, getting ready for another busy season next year.
