Hi Dominique, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I have been well thank you! It’s a really exciting time for me with the release of the new single. There’s electricity in the air for sure.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “High In The Valley”?
High In The Valley is based mostly upon my days at approximately 19 years old- Feeling a bit hopeless and overwhelmed about pursuing my dreams, and just getting high everyday while going through the motions. Growing up a stone’s throw from Los Angeles can make big music dreams seem almost attainable, but at the same time, like a really tricky mountain to traverse.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
YES! It will be premiering soon and I can’t wait for everyone to see. It’s directed by this super cool director Dana Boulos who was wonderful to collaborate with. I’m incredibly inspired by visuals, so working with someone who understood my vision was super important- and she totally got me!
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote the song with Kenny Fleetwood, Jasmine Ash and Joseph Holiday. Joseph also produced the song. The writing process was super fun with those guys, and we wrote it in just a few hours. The title and concept, as well as the first line of the song, I had written down years before and none of them had properly come to materialize yet. But I felt very strongly about all those elements and was essentially “saving” them for the right song. So when we all got in to write and those lines and ideas clicked, I was so happy that my co-writers helped me craft them into something we were all super proud of.
Why the break between releasing new material?
Just life I guess! Nothing intentional. I was in the process of writing and really honing in on more songs to record when I found out my label went under and I would no longer be signed or have that support system. Then it was just a process of plotting and planning to record this song, and now FINALLY releasing it into the world.
What role does LA play in your music?
I was born and raised about 30 minutes outside of LA, and I’ve lived in LA proper for 13 years, so it’s definitely home to me. There is inspiration everywhere here, in the beauty and the grit. I’ve made SO many musician friends in LA too, it’s crazy. The network of people here is priceless. So just being around the atmosphere of creating and playing, seeing other people’s shows etc.- is all a big part of my life here.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new full-length release at some point – how’s that coming along if already in progress?
I definitely will be recording a full length at some point in the near future. Not yet in process, but definitely partially written, and with a lot of inspiration at the ready.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’d love to! Nothing in stone yet, but cooking up some ideas. If another band has an amazing tour to invite me on, I’m IN!
What else is happening next in Dominique Pruitt’s world?
I have a few more songs in the wings that have to be recorded, and definitely more music videos! More shows too. Stay tuned!
