Doing great RJ, no complaints.I’m geeked to be chatting with VENTS!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Nowhere”?
Nowhere is my baabbyy, literally the first record I recorded on this solo debut. It’s such an “anytime of the day… however you’re feeling,” vibe, with classic r&b vocals over heavy bass. You’re gonna wanna sing to it.You’re gonna wanna cue it up before you put the car in drive, adjust your bass levels, bob to it and repeat! What’s special about it, is that I live the lyrics. They say, look… no matter where I am in the world or what I’m doing, it’s not worth anything to me if Iove isn’t right there doing it with me.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I teamed up with singer-songwriter and boss, Kaleena Harper, to write this record. After having not written/recorded together since my early Atlantic Records days and catching up on life a bit, she could tell right away where my head was.I had just made a move from Texas to California and though I was making new business moves I was just as enveloped in my love life.Basically, I was “Nowhere” without love.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Oh, a video is definitely happening! Concept treatments have already been written up, which I’m geeked to share in the near future. The goal is something authentic to the song’s storyline and to who I am as an artist.I don’t wanna force any superficial visuals.I just wanna take the viewer by the hand and say “Come with me… rock to this…feel this… hear this.” I want it to be a catching back up with an old friend who has a fresh perspective on life & love.
How was the recording and writing process?
So, I made a list of a few good people that I had interests in working with, Kalenna being one because of her creative genius and Cam Wallace another, because of his work on Beyonce’s “Upgrade you,” and being from my hometown. I flew to Atlanta where they both were coincidentally already working together on Christina Milians album.Cam ran down a couple of tracks for me, one in particular HOT as fish grease (lol), so I snagged it. Kalenna has this instinctive gift of picking up on where an artist is when they walk in the studio that day and she literally walked into the booth and freestyled a demo reference based on our pre-recording girl chat.We laid vocals down, Cam chopped & screwed the ending in true H-town fashion and the rest is history.
What role does Texas play in your music?
I wear my heart on my sleeve, as a southerner would, so emotions often fuel my creative juices. But I’d be remiss to not specify that I was given that permission to do so, by the countless Texas soul singers (blues and gospel included) whose music I grew up doing my chores & taking road trips to. Hence, the soul music flowing through my veins.
Does acting influence your music and the other way around?
The level of confidence I need to act and interpret scripts, GREATLY influences how I approach musical performance challenges. At the same time, in music, there is a certain level of “trusting the gift,” you gotta embrace, that always comes in handy when I’m overthinking the approach to an acting script.Balance is the recipe of success!
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?
I’ve been known to be a little over-accommodating when it comes to collaborations.I never wanna be the person to kill someone else’s art.At the same time, what good is a crystal with dimmed light? So, expectations & deal breakers should always be set right out of the gate, so that everyone can just enjoy the process.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
You can expect so much more material.I’ve got an whole EP, fully locked, loaded and ready for release. It’s been so rewarding hearing how people have responded positively to the single so when the choreography and visuals hit that we have on deck… Watch out now! (lol)
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The EP is self-titled to reflect this whole rebirth of creative independence and our plans are to release before your holidays get cracking.
Any plans to hit the road?
Ahhh, the stage is where the magic happens, so we definitely plan to hit the road, targeting the major cities and adding a couple of additional spot dates in the south.
What else is happening next in Crystal Tamar’s world?
After this release and promo run, I have big hopes of being so well re-acquainted with who God’s uniquely made me as an artist, that I can begin touring and collaborating more with my counter parts. That certainty alone would be the greatest long term goal for me.
