INTERVIEW: Lost In Japan

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great! Just released a record and its doing quiet well. we are very happy about that!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Never Was You”?

Never Was You was our fourth and last single off of our album we just currently released. It also came together the fastest out of all the other tracks on the record. We kind of pushed outside of our usual genre for this track because we usually have an indie rock/ pop sound so it was cool to go for something a little heavier.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The single Never was you was inspired by an argument we witnessed happening between two people on the bus here in London. They were arguing and screaming at eachother it was practically impossible to ignore it. That got us inspired to write a song about arguing with a significant other. Even if we don’t like to admit it its something that everyone has to go through and even myself (Addison singer) can relate to this song.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Absolutely, we’re currently in the process of working out ideas for the video should have something very soon for you!

The single comes off your new self-titled album – why naming the record after the band?

We were trying to find a right name for this album and honestly everything we came out with was just not a great fit or downright ridiculous. So our producer (Kyle Ashbourne) actually recommended the idea of it being a self titled record. At first it didnt make a lot of sense but the more we thought about it and listened to the album we thought it fit perfectly. It also was our first full length record any of us had made so it was a big deal for us and we really wanted to show people that this is us and we’re really happy with the outcome.

How was the recording and writing process?

The whole album was written over a year. We would write three songs and then go in and record them and then wait a couple of months till we thought we had more songs that were good enough to be on this record. So it was totally a back and forth thing and honestly we went into the studio sometimes without a couple tracks being fully written which could have turned out awful on our end. We recorded at two studios here in london the majority of the record was at the sugar shack with nine songs and the other three was at EMAC studios.

How did you get to capture the live essence into the studio album?

Like we said earlier some of the parts weren’t fully written yet when we went into the studio and thats probably why some of the recording had a live essence to it. because in the studio we were literally playing the track over and over until we recorded the right part for it. So in a sense we were almost jamming until we had something great.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

the whole album in itself has a theme of growing up, overcoming nostalgia and existential crises to find yourself. We all contributed in our own way when writing this album. We found inspiration when we were actually on tour and were discussing things that made us nostalgic and had the conversation wheter nostalgia is healthy or not. That idea kind of stuck with us and really built a foundation for the rest of the record.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re hitting the road next Friday! First date in ottawa which we couldn’t be more excited for!

What else is happening next in Lost In Japan’s world?

We’re already thinking about our next release and what direction we want to take as a band. We have some pretty different ideas coming that we think people are really going to like so thats something everyone can stay tuned and look forward to but for now enjoy the record!
