INTERVIEW: Lex Luca

Hi Lex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I’ve been great thanks! I’ve been spending a lot of time in the studio this year learning, developing and growing as an artist, (and outside the studio, as a human being too!). I’m grateful to be here, surrounded by so many inspiring and interesting people and of course, by so much great music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single House Party?

Yes. It’s a driving house record, with a cheeky disco sample which serves as the hook. I was going through some of my vinyl collection, digging for samples to use, and this just jumped out. I built the track around the sample and it’s one of my favourites to date. To have one of the key figures in dance music Annie Mac play it on her Friday night show on BBC Radio 1 and endorse it with the quote “Love it!” was a great moment last week.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I love the original track, it brings back some great memories, and it just seemed to work.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Actually I have some super cool videos produced by a great friend and extremely talented 4d graphic producer, who goes by the name Last Guard [@LastGuard]  They should be up online very soon!

How was the recording and writing process?

Once I found the sample, this track came together quite quick, as it’s main focus is the sample hook. (Let’s be honest here, getting that killer sample/hook is not always a fast process). So, once i had that, then it was just a case of making sure the energy and the drive was right throughout the track. Of course, I spent a bit of time on the drop to make sure it was right. I’m happy with the way it turned out!

Now as a label owner – how does all that knowledge and experiences on that field has help and influence your music?

We’re learning all the time, and I’d say my knowledge and experiences, not just as a music producer, but also as a DJ and as a clubber and all-round lover of music contributes massively. I’m committed to releasing the music that I love; music I want to play out and to creating a platform for producers to be fully self-expressed through their music, and to enjoy the process too.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or remixing someone else rather than in your own?

Yes for sure. Collaborating can be about exploring & developing you sounds, and expanding into a new common space for creation. I’ll only take on remixes when I hear elements of an original track I like and can use to create something new within my sound palette.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

To be honest, I’ve always got new material coming. I make music every day and finish a few tracks a month so you can certainly expect new material on-goingly!

Having travelled about most of the world – how does all these different cultures influences your sound?

I find traveling to be a great source of inspiration, and not just for music. So, it’s always great to experience new places, countries and cultures. I’m always interested in sounds and rhythms from around the world, as well as art, dance, film, architecture and people! I’ve explored extensively the sounds of Cuba and Japan for example, which are two fascinating places with their own rich and diverse history of music. Discovering the underground dance music scenes is also eye opening. It’s refreshing, enlivening and one of the joys of being alive. I’ll bring that inspiration back to my studio for sure. Sometimes it’s specific sounds and samples, sometimes it’s just a feeling, an energy or a new zest for creativity.

Any plans to hit the road again anytime soon?

Yes currently in discussions, in the UK and international – you’ll be the first to know once they get confirmed!

What else is happening next in Lex Luca’s world?

We’re now gearing up for the 1st anniversary of In Tune, with an In Tune Remix package due on 26/10/18. The Harry Romero remix of my track Control Ya has already been heavily supported by Danny Howard. Plus we have a remix from rising star producer Felipe Fella, and I’ve done a Terrace Mix of my track High Fashion.

I have a few of releases lined up, including a track for Big Beat Records which is a proper vibe – that’s due out in December. I also have a couple of collab projects that I’ll be releasing next year on a new collab series, for In Tune. Plus another couple of EPs ready for In Tune… To keep up to date, come and follow @lexluca
