INTERVIEW: Letters From Pluto

Hi Kristy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! Thanks so much for having me! I’m great thanks – just about ready have a really big show and release party for my new single, so it’s been busy and chaotic, but things are awesome! It’s always so exciting performing and releasing new music

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Right To Know”?

“Right to Know” is about a relationship with someone and you’re not sure where you stand. Are they as into you as you are to them? Are they invested? Because you’re all in, but you need answers. You could say, you have a Right To Know what’s going on.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Maybe…but that’s my little secret. haha. I always write my songs from experiences I’ve encountered…but that’s all I’ll say for now ;P

Any plans to release a video for the single?

At this moment I don’t have any plans to release a music video, BUT I’m filming a documentary about the upcoming single release show I’m having! A sort of “road-to-the-show” video. It’s taking place in the coolest venue ever – live with lasers and space projections. It’s going to be a really big show, and I can’t wait for everyone to see all the behind the scenes stuff!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process for this song was quick. Sometimes music comes first, other times lyrics come first. But this time I had the first verse lyrics almost already completed, but no melody. The music came next, and then the rest of it took shape from there. Within 1 day the entire structure of the song was there, and then the lyrics came very quickly after that. The vibe of the song perfectly fits what I was trying to achieve when I first started.

What was it like to work with Ian Prince and how did that relationship develop?

Ian Prince is honestly one of my favourite people on this planet. We first met almost 3 years ago and I was looking to get some songs produced. I was searching online for a producer that I felt could really achieve what I was looking for. I reached out and contacted him and he responded! From there we spent quite a bit of time communicating about influences, vibe, who I am as a person and artist – and we got along IMMEDIATELY. I knew he’d be the guy for the job and would give me what I was looking for. He produced most of the songs on my EP (which released in 2016) and my single that released this past April, and my new single, “Right to Know”.

How much did he get to influence the song?

Ian and I really work in tandem together. I try to explain what I’m looking for and start with ideas. I sit in sessions with him as he builds the track and he somehow manages to understand what I’m saying by things like “I want a really gritty synth sound here, but not too gritty, know what I mean? – like what about something ethereal there – this and that” and then from there he tries out my ideas, and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t and he’ll tell me why – then he’ll add his ideas about what he thinks would be a good addition to the sound. Then once he’s built a lot of the track, I leave it with him and he does his magic! I’m so grateful to work with him and glad to be his friend.

What role does Edmonton play in your music?

A lot of Edmonton artists have a very DIY approach to being a musician. We have less of a music industry than many major cities, so there are programs designed to help educate indie artists on how to take control of their careers and how to best proceed when you feel stuck. There’s no rule book to the music industry, and if you’re an independent artist, it’s key to educate yourself as best as possible.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

You bet it does! I have more music I’m working on and writing lots of songs at the moment. It’s really exciting – I’m pumped about my upcoming tunes!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

At this point I’m not exactly sure when I’ll release next, but definitely 2019. I have some exciting work coming up ahead of me, so keep your eyes peeled! Or should I say ears? ;P I do have a title in mind, but that’s gonna be my secret for a little while!

Any plans to hit the road?

I would absolutely LOVE to hit the road. That’s in the plans for the future, just have to figure out the timing! Will VENTS be in the crowd??

What else is happening next in Letters From Pluto’s world?

After this show and release of my new single, I’m going to go into heavy songwriting mode for a while. I can’t wait to get all these thoughts turned into songs.

You can listen to ‘Right to Know’ HERE.
