Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Fine! Working hard, singing and going crazy 😀
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Between The Light And The Stone”?
“Between the Light and the Stone” is a summary of the Album, the peak of the full LP. It’s the longest track of “The Archinauts” (14 minutes), but for Official Video we extracted the first part (Fragile). The track’s about the collateral beauty of human frailty, that makes us realize the world is wonderful, and we deserve more time for ourselves and for enjoying the life. The first part is a symphonic composition, in which our classical roots are recognizable. The second part is a dialogue between us on a rhythmic Hammond and the third part is an epic ending, which a mixing of our voices.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Falling in love with my partner Ilenia (the half part of Isproject), suffering because of the past events, studying, watching the beauty of the world, concerts, nature, architecture : this song is a summary of my last life, through thick and thin, and of my hopes for the future. The structure is out-of-the-scheme, the song describes a wide variety of feelings, like a journey into human beings.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
I filmed the video with the help of some friends of us. I decided to be the director because I love the cinema and we had many ideas so difficult to explain. I imagined the song and I thought what image I wanted to link : from the gently and delicacy of the beautiful Ilenia to the powerful nature, from the speed of metropolis to the architecture elegance. We are both architects, and our love for details, design and photography played the main role for the making of the video. I don’t like to be protagonist on video, especially because I am not a good actor 😛 . Some clips were shot in our town, Andria, between countryside, Castel del Monte and glimpses of old city. They represents in the better way the purest nature of the world.
The single comes off your new album The Archinauts – what’s the story behind the title?
“Between the light and the stone” describes our origin of the journey as human beings. We are all between the light (a synecdoche for the sky, the sun, the space, what we would like to reach but it is difficult) and the stone (a synecdoche for the ground, that holds us in place). On the track we describe the path towards new horizons and “stars” and becoming Archinaut, a traveler and a builder of our memory and our world.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing process was very simple : first, I composed the songs on piano, the “backbone” of the album, and after I worked on the arrangements (vocal arrangements with Ilenia). I recorded the album demo from 2013 to 2015, at my ex personal home studio. On the june 2015 I met the art director of AMS Records, Zuffanti, that was interested in our concept. So we decided to record with amazing musicians for the worldwide release of “The Archinauts” with the label AMS Records/BTF.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?
When I work on my own, I take my time. I experience new sounds, totally free; but the collaboration with other musicians is a great way to increase own skills. I like both approaches because they enriched me in different ways. Solitude help me to delve down into the bowels of my soul and for channeling ideas, the confrontations with others allows me to overcome my limits. I enjoy playing music with colleagues, it’s funny like we are bowling.
What role does Italy play in your music?
It’s a fantastic answer. Italy is my birthplace, my roots, The compositions are based on the amazing and unique views of my country, Apulia, and I’ll always be grateful for my “Italian heart”. Italy gave me the instruments for creating music and shaping my ideas. But in Italy there’s no space for people like us, that thinks differently, trying to innovate. It’s for this reason that we bought a one-way ticket to UK 😉
What is it about the 70s that you find so fascinating?
The freedom, the experimentation, the authenticity. I learned about Seventies from my parents and reading books, listening album. Obviously it’s not a complete knowledge, I’m 27. Many things were undiscovered, the music and art were created with enthusiasm and passion, experimenting new sounds and new colours (looking at results). It was a perfect age for a musician and an architect, isn’t it?
How Steven Wilson and Anathema has influence your writing?
Steven Wilson and Anathema have so fascinating ways to see art and music : images and true stories touch them within, and the compositions are the results of their feelings. We have these features and how we express our messages is similar to their. Going off the grid, or being free to be themselves maybe are the best ways to instill the passion and the courage to express our inner worlds. For exemple, talking about the Steven Wilson’s “Grace For Drowning” (him most powerful and impressive work imho) : the photography, the atmosphere, the lyrics and the setlist have been fine-tuned. Or Anathema’s Weather System , that isn’t different. Groomed works. Their orchestral arrangements, the vocals, the piano “backbone” on Untouchable part I-II inspired us a lot.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I find the inspiration in a unique way : living situations. Let me explain : I imagine the life, our troubles, events in my mind like a movie. Every movie has a soundtrack, that help the images to express the feelings in a better way. I compose in my mind the soundtrack for images and feelings in particular events I have in my minds. We have infact a passionate love for Score composer : Alexander Desplat, Hans Zimmer, Dario Marianelli, Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, John Williams are only few exemples of remarkable composers that we love.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We’ll go to Canada at the Terra Incognita Festival on May 2019, playing together with IZZ, Phideaux, Bjørn Ryss, ect. I hope we will drink tea with them! 😛 Meantime we are planning other European and North American shows, in Netherlands, France, UK and North Italy.
What else is happening next in ISPROJECT’s world?
Firstly, Ilenia and me have decided to move to UK. We think we’ll have more chances to increase our cultural baggage, our inspirations and our success. Maybe Italy is not ready for our visionary thought and it doesn’t give us the tools to reach the top. During the tour and the preparations for our departure, we are composing the new album: this work is a highly mature work, more fresh and emotional. We are very impressive by ourselves! There will be many international special guests and we can’t wait for work with them.
