Hi, Thank you! I’ve been great thanks… busy, busy!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Good Behavior”?
“Good Behavior” is super special to me. It is my very first released single in the US, where I got to work with an incredible team on it. I think it’s a super fun song and am quite proud of it.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, when I got into studio, as always, I wanted to write about something I had been going through. I was crushing on someone I wasn’t supposed to be crushing on and I felt that I needed to write about it, so as to try and manage my confusion around it. I think a lot of people have gone through this situation and the song is a fun, light-hearted take on it.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was very easy and smooth, but an amazing and fun experience. I loved working with such a talented group of people. The studio session was very relaxed with everyone on the same page and open to everyone’s suggestions. Everything fell into place so smoothly!
What’s been like to work with Pam Sheyne and how did that relationship develop?
I am in awe of her, and having the privilege of working with her is just the best. She has become an incredible mentor and friend and we have developed a special bond. A couple of years ago I recorded one of Pam’s songs called “Little White Lie” and we’ve worked together ever since.
How much did she influence the songs?
We have gotten to know each other pretty well (as most songwriting teams do) and this made it easier to create these songs together. She has definitely taught me to be bold and speak my truth with my songwriting and has given me a lot of confidence in doing so.
What role does South Africa play in your music?
I was born and raised in South Africa and started my music career there. One’s hometown will always play that special role.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or covering someone else rather than in your own?
Yes, of course. Each song is different and requires a different approach. When I do covers, I try to make it my own by performing from my own perspective. That’s the magic in music: we all feel it differently.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, definitely! I have been working hard in studio for the past few months and have a lot of new material that I’m very happy about. Can’t wait to share it all.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I can’t share that just yet, but it’s all very soon.
Any plans to hit the road?
What else is happening next in Filipa’s world?
There’s the new material to be out there very soon, some live performances, and I’m also hoping to finish my studies.
