Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Anthurium”?
It was actually the last song that we wrote before going to record the EP with Ian Sadler. We were originally planning on using another song its place.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
The lyrics are about looking back on a relationship and all of the things that went wrong.
Any plans to release a music video for the single?
No. However, we do have two music videos coming out over the next couple of months. ‘i’m sorry’ will be released 30/10/18 at 5 PM.
The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why naming the record after the band?
We named the band ‘downcast’ because the word is a good representation of the kind of songs that we write, so it made sense to call the EP that too.
How was the recording and writing process?
We wrote and demoed the songs in our bedrooms until we felt that we had five songs that were strong enough to be released. We then went into the studio with Ian Sadler who helped us to bring the them to life.
What was it like to work with Ian Sadler and how did that relationship develop?
We’ve actually worked with him before, so we had a good idea of what to expect. We spent about a week with him, going over the songs and perfecting them. He had a bunch of cool ideas which really helped to make the songs stand out. We had a good laugh during the time, and I’d definitely recommend him as a producer.
How much did he get to influence the record?
He gave his input where it was necessary and he felt that he could improve our songs, but he didn’t do anything that completely changed the sound of the material that we originally brought into the studio with us.
What role does the UK play in your writing?
There are a lot of great UK bands like Neck Deep, Roam and WSTR who we definitely aspire to be like in some ways and take influence from.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I write about what’s happening in my life at the time or reflect on things which have happened in the past. I think you need to be honest in your writing cause as a listener, you can usually tell if a lyricist is being disingenuous.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yeah! We’ll be hitting the road early next year.
What else is happening next in DOWNCAST’s world?
We’ve already begun writing songs for our second record, and we’re really excited about them!
