INTERVIEW: Hearts of Oak

Hi Nate, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been good.  Nice place.  Thanks for having us.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “High Water”?

Of course.  That’s the dance track on Moves for sure.  The catchiest song on the album.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

No specific event.  The song is just about the everyday struggle.  Battling your  demons, climbing out of the ditch, into the light only to get dragged down by another wave.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’m thinking of surfing.  I’ve never surfed but that might make a good video for this song.

Actually filming a video this weekend for it, working on locating a dory to borrow for the shoot.

The single comes off your new album Moves – what’s the story behind the title?

The band was thinking this album is a transition away from the country/ folk sound we we’ve been known for.  “Moves”  over simplified maybe, but I’m a fan of one word titles.

How was the recording and writing process?

Well recording at the Deer Lodge something everyone should try at least once.  You don’t’ know what you’re missing.  As far as writing, that’s all I really do and to have a band that takes songs and flushes them out beyond anything I could of imagined.   Well, I’m just a lucky guy.

What role does Oregon play in your writing?

I try not to write specifically about Oregon.   I do take everything I experience here and try to write songs that could be related to anywhere by anyone.   Except the song “Oregon” I wrote on the first record.   That’s about Oregon, well drinking in Oregon.

How do you get to blend the Shoegazer with your Country roots?

I think it’s a one of the pedals on Ezra’s board…. but I’m not sure what any of the pedals really do.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I’m not really ever sure, but lately one song seems to flow into another idea and so on.

I’ve always found this question funny.  I  felt like when I read songwriters answers to this question they were guarding some secret.  Really though I think they don’t know either.

I do know the muse goes easier than comes so you have to be welcoming when it decides to visit.

Any plans to hit the road?

Planning a NW tour in the spring.

What else is happening next in Hearts of Oak’s world?

Going to drink some beers, play some shows and help this little LP Moves get out in the World on it’s own.  Then back to the studio.  Already working on the next one.
