Hi Van, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been fabulous.  Just getting back from Barcelona actually.  I ate a lot of ham and squid there.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Kickdrum Heartbeat”?

Kickdrum Heartbeat is a spiritual elixir meant to uplift and regenerate the soul.  It is a call to dance and spread good vibes despite the uncertain state of the world.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I’ve lived in SF and LA, both of which have a heavily homeless population.   I have a background in social work…working with homeless youth and the mentally ill.   I’ve seen people in the most dire situations who are able to laugh and smile despite their circumstances. So this song is about remaining positive and letting storms pass patiently.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes yes!  The video is shot and edited and we are getting ready to release it very soon!

How was the recording and writing process?

I started with drums.  Drums are an emotive instrument for me.  So the I built a chord structure on guitar to flesh out the initial emotional direction.  I came up the the “yea yea yea yea yea yea” hook pretty early.  That statement felt very primal and visceral. I then layered synths, vocals and guitars.  I produced the track and Luke Moellman (Great good fine ok) mixed it.  Bitfunk mastered it.

What role does LA play in your music?

LA is a competitive but very collaborative city.  I really like that everyone is down to try new ideas and support each other.  LA has challenged me as an artist and made me question myself and my craft.  It has shown me new forms of art and being.

How Van Morrison and Phil Collins has influence your writing?

Van Morrison=soul and lyricism.  Phil Collins=Rhythm and Melody.  Both strong songwriting.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Much new material is done and or being finished.  Putting the final touches on some hot stuff I’m excited about.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Top of 2019 be ready.

Any plans to hit the road?

Land, air and sea!

What else is happening next in Van Bobbi’s world?

I’m shooting a series called “lunch with Van Bobbi” see instagram @vanbobbi and I have some shows coming up in oct/nov with the indie pop dance party called “dance yourself clean in NYC, Portland, Seattle, sf and LA.
