INTERVIEW: Fake Shark

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Busy! Sitting on our biggest amount of new material we’ve ever accumulated. We, of course, think it’s our best, but that’s what every artist says. But, who would want to hear a band who thinks their new material is not as good as last years. Not good PR, guys.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Smile”?

It was a song that came about from me (Kevvy) not knowing how to play piano that well, so I just sat down and came up with those chords, then wrote the bassline and groove to that. I had another song called Smile I wrote, but while I liked the lyrical content, the music wasn’t giving my chills, so I adapted the words to this and wrote a new melody.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I had listened to a podcast where a person discussed being content in being alone for the rest of their life, and I was examining if that was a lifestyle for me. It was a comment on romance and how my standards have become so high based on tragedies of love in the past. It’s mostly me saying no one seems to be out there for me, but subconsciously I’m hoping someone proves me wrong.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Funny you should ask, just wrote a treatment!

How was the recording and writing process?

Quick and easy, the way one hopes it always goes. I wrote a structure and the actual musicians in my band made me sound clever. Thank goodness for Lou, Alex, Tony and Jake.

What role does Vancouver play in your writing?

Occasional place for recording and writing, but it’s not something I write about. It wouldn’t be that personal for me to write about a city, but it would be about my experiences within that city, I think.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Sooooo much new material. Our live set is mostly new stuff. And it’s translating better than our old stuff.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Just before the new year, there should be a batch of jams released!

What aspect of romance and love will you be exploring on the record?

It seems to be all I talk about lately, which is interesting, because it was a topic I avoided in the past for our music. I just try to be honest and not trite with it. Self-deprecating, self-referencing, self-defence.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re in the midst of a batch of cool shows with bands like Our Lady Peace and the Glorious Sons!

What else is happening next in Fake Shark’s world?

New merch, new artwork, new songs, new videos, new hair colours. Tony still likes liquorice.
