Brothers Todd and Guy Speakman create the perfect synergy as North-West London based production duo Speakman Sound. Having spent their life immersed in boundaryless music, their upbringing in Glastonbury with a father heavily involved in the Psychedelic music scene forged a limitless attitude that comes across in each release.
2017 debut In Flight saw great tastemaker support across BBC R1 and 6Music from Monki, Huw Stephens & Phil Taggart, as well as Lauren Laverne proclaiming it as one of her favourite tracks of 2017 which helped land a performance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury Festival. Follow-up EP, Warm, continued to explore deep club sounds, as well as their darker influences.
In 2018, the duo Continue to explore their club music influences pulling more themes from mainstream pop, as well as going back to take inspiration from Todd’s jazz background.
Releasing September 12th, This Time, which features the vocal talents of Pepper Rose, is an anti-four-to-the-floor groove with a Latin American vibe which moves in sync with the house flavoured synth work. The production is deep and intricate with many layers creating a narrative and landscape that constantly feels fresh but familiar. Their signature production style carries an American influence whilst remaining very UK, which is captured perfectly in Pepper Rose’s vocals and its extreme London flavour.
On the motivation behind This Time, Speakman Sound share “Lyrically, the song is about the contradiction in our heads between encouragement and regret. There’s a hidden male vocal that whispers “you’ve really messed it up this time” whilst Pepper’s main vocal shouts about persistence, encouragement and positive thinking.”
