Godmother as a whole is about having a laugh in the face of death. We as a collective species are on our deathbed – so why not have an orgy? Before we climax with apocalyptic scenarios, though, let’s start out with a li’l drinking song: “I got a friend who goes to AA / and she says I oughta join her someday / but it’s kinda far and I don’t got a car / and the nearest bar is just twelve steps away”. Basically, the song is about how the pleasures that make life worth living are often what kill us – and about being fine with that.

“Death Drive” is written and sung by Joey Hansom and features electric cello by Stellan Veloce (of the contemporary classical collective Y-E-S) as well as backing vocals by Kaia Bremnes, the singer of dream-pop band Jackie Charles. Joey produced the track together with Mika Risiko a.k.a. Ziúr. She and Joey are the founders of Boo Hoo (one of “Berlin’s Best Underground Club Nights” according to i-D), and Joey has also provided DJ support for the likes of Perfume Genius and SSION at their Berlin concerts. While Godmother does have some clubby moments, “Death Drive” isn’t really concerned with killing the dancefloor – it’s more the kind of tune you’d bump while cruising in your hearse.

The cover artwork – a minimalist yet psychedelic tapestry of text – was created by Stefan Fähler, following his work for the likes of Marc AlmondAriel Pink and Xiu Xiu. The goal was a typographic-based work that would reflect the project’s intertextuality. It was designed digitally, then embroidered, then photographed. The result represents Godmother as a conjuror of cosmic images, where familiar glyphs can evoke a sense of wonder.

Godmother has played in New York, London, Paris and of course Berlin, from performing arts festivals to basement sex clubs. Their music video for “MTFTM” was an official selection at the 2016 Porn Film Festival Berlin.
