-Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Driving Me Crazy”?
Yes. I am very excited about sharing this song with everyone. It is a sort of coming of age song about the changes that occur when we grow up. These changes can be confusing, especially in our feelings directed towards some of our friends. The impact that these uncontrollable reactions have on us can LITERALLY drive you crazy!
-Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Well, I mean my friends and I are all currently in this stage of life where we are starting to really change and grow, both physically or mentally. We have no idea what is going on with us, but feel something new and unfamiliar. The song captures some of these complicated new emotions.
-How was the recording and writing process?
I loved writing this song. I feel that songs that come from within you, tend to flow very easily when writing. I am also very lucky to have many people around me who gave me ideas and suggestions that helped me improve the first versions of the song.
-I heard there is a music video on the horizon; how was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Yes, the video is coming out shortly. I wanted this video to include many of my close friends with whom I have shared many of the experiences in the song. It was so much fun to film. We filmed over a couple of days in a variety of locations including my school and a local park. It was one big party which continued long after the shooting ended. I’m so lucky because I have such a great and ongoing support system at school and my friends are always looking for different ways to help/participate.
-What role does Toronto play in your music?
The greatest thing about Toronto is that it has people from so many different backgrounds and cultures and therefore the music scene is very diverse. It’s really special to live in such a big city filled with so much talent. Some of my favorite artists that I look up to came from Toronto– for example Shawn Mendes, Drake and Alessia Cara.
-How does classical background influence your music overall?
Classical vocal and piano training has had a big impact on me. Classical vocal training helps me with proper breath control, posture and so much more. I train with Melissa Bencic at Bravo Academy and have been with her since I was 7!
-Does the new single mean we can expect more new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, I just finished recording a bunch of new songs. One of them is called “Who We Are.” It’s a ballad about standing up for what you believe in and surrounding yourself with love and not hate.
-If you could create your own dream tour, what artists would you perform and travel with?
If I had to tour with another artist it would have to be a British artist by the name of JORJA SMITH! Her voice style is so unique and beautiful and I think our voices would mesh really well together. Love her so much. I hope that I can meet and collaborate with her one day.
-What else is happening next in Aviv Cohen’s world?
Well tomorrow I have a math test… joking aside, I just received a lead role in a cool new short film. We start shooting in a couple of weeks…. details to come.
