Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi releases a new single —“Grace” — today via Capitol Records and all digital partners. The emotionally resonant love song was co-written by Capaldi and Nick Atkinson and Edd Holloway, who also produced the track.
An official video for “Grace,” directed by Louis Bhose, also premieres today on Vevo. In the video, Capaldi is asked by a female friend to cover her shift as an exotic dancer at the local club. He gamely climbs onstage and works the pole, to the initial dismay of the all-male patrons. However Capaldi’s performance, in which he is backed by four shirtless male dancers and completes a gravity-defying mid-air flip, has the men happily cheering him on by the end.
“’Grace’ is a song about being with someone who makes any negative shit going on in your life feel irrelevant,” says Capaldi. “There’s just something class about finding someone who can do that and I think it’s funny that the feeling of falling for someone can kind of feel like there’s a song stuck in your head that you can’t get out- like they’re this one recurring thought that you keep coming back to throughout the day. The only difference being, that having a song stuck in your head is annoying as fuck and this isn’t. I think when you do get somebody who makes you feel like that, you kind of don’t know what you were ever doing or how you felt before and that’s where the line about finding salvation in the form of your grace comes from.
For the video I kind of wanted to do something a bit different. There are some people who are really good at doing sincere videos and stuff like that and that’s cool but it’s just not me, despite my songs being emotional I’m not really the serious type so I thought it’d be funny to just do the most ridiculous idea imaginable.”
Twenty-one year-old Capaldi was hailed as a 2018 Vevo Dscvr Artist To Watch, longlisted for the BBC Sound Of 2018 Poll, and won Breakthrough Artist of the Year honors at the Scottish Music Awards. His 2017 debut EP, Bloom, has over 200 million combined streams worldwide. Bloom features “Bruises,” a track that showcases Capaldi’s nimble vocal ability, as he effortlessly slips between smooth baritone, gravelly mid-tone, and haunting falsetto with pinpoint accuracy. “Bruises” shot to No. 1 on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist and has over 200 million combined streams globally.
Capaldi has toured with Rag’n’Bone Man, Niall Horan, and Sam Smith, and performed at such festivals as Lollapalooza, Bonnaro, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Splendour in the Grass, Fuji, and Osheaga. He has sold out headline shows in both the U.S and U.K. and will appear at the Austin City Limits Festival on October 5th before embarking on a UK and European tour this fall.
