Doing great! We just played a hardcore fest in Tucson, AZ called Desert Dweller with a bunch of our friends, and we have some cool stuff planned for this month.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Head Change”?
It’s one of two tracks off our new 7” Portuguese Bend coming out on Sep 28th and, for us, it’s a more straightforward and fun song that we love jammin’. Lyrically, “Head Change” is about thoughts I had sitting on the cliffs at Portuguese Bend, wondering about what’s right for me and how I can push myself to get there.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not one in particular. They’re more thoughts and feelings we’ve had, maybe after reflecting on our more recent life. I think I’m at a point where I’m reevaluating a lot of strong feelings I’ve had in life and seeing what still resonates with me and what I can change for the better.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I think it would be fun to do something for it, but there are no concrete plans right now. We are working on something cool for the other song off the 7” though! That’ll be out later this month.
The single comes off your new 7″ Portuguese Bend – what’s the story behind the title?
Portuguese Bend is a cliffside community south of Los Angeles in the South Bay where we spent a lot of time hanging out and growing up. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world with a lot of natural wildlife still intact, and it feels sort of like a hidden land. Naming the 7” after it is just a big shout out to a place we love and a place that has definitely inspired us.
How was the recording and writing process?
All the music was pretty much written in the practice room, jammin’ out and putting together ideas as we went! When it came time to record, we went with our good friend Erol Ulug who runs a studio in Orange County called Bright Lights. We decided to live track everything as we feel it captures an energy that track-by-track recording doesn’t always get.
What role does South California play in your writing?
In some ways, it’s very directly influenced our writing. But something I always say about the area is that it’s a land of a lot of opportunities, different music, and all sorts of rad things to get inspiration from. We’re constantly able to pull from different sources, some of them being great friends, and I think it’s a huge blessing for us that we enjoy a lot.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Musically, I think a lot of our peers inspired us. Lyrically, there are some common themes like love and feeling stuck, but a lot of these reflections are related to experiences we had at Portuguese Bend.
Any plans to hit the road?
We have some short runs planned for the rest of this year, but 2019 is gonna be a big year of touring for us. We want to go everywhere next year.
What else is happening next in Modern Color’s world?
Aside from the 7”, it’s just writing, more shows, touring, and figuring out how we can take everything to bigger and better levels.
