I’ve been great! Happy that I get to chat with Vents 🙂
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dream Of Me”?
I’m very excited about this one! It’s a slightly new direction for me. It’s a little more mature compared to the previous songs I have released. It’s just a more grown up version of me. The song dabbles in the pop/urban area with a few soulful undertones.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I was hanging out with some of my best friends and we got into a discussion about being a single woman and what that means. We ended up getting into a whole conversation about self-exploration and the concept of love and lust – that sometimes it’s ok to not fall in love but instead indulge in the feeling of lust. That was what inspired the song. I really just wanted this to feel empowering to women, to have freedom of expression, to explore sexuality and imagination on their own terms, and to be confident and proud of who they are and who they want to be. And of course, to have fun!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! It will be coming out late October. It’s going to be a fun one!
How was the recording and writing process?
I love spending time in the studio writing and recording, especially when it’s with some of my best friends. It’s a very vulnerable process so it’s great when you get to write with people you love and trust. When everyone is on the same page, it just flows. On this particular track, we came up with the melody first. The first words we explored were ‘Dream Of Me’ and the rest is history.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or covering someone else rather than in your own?
Yes – when it comes to my cover songs, I usually choose current top 40 hits or every so often I will do a throwback. I choose songs that are most requested. What I love to do is only listen to the original a handful of times so I can get familiar with the melody and once I know it well enough, I start formulating my own version. Most of the time I will go into the studio, jump in the vocal booth, and just start singing and see where it takes me. The magic happens when you least expect it.
As you keep gaining success – does that put any pressure on you?
As you gain more traction with anything, the more pressure you tend to put on yourself. It’s the feeling of constantly wanting to do better. Sometime pressure is what you need to get to that next step.
Working with some top-notch producers – how much room does that leaves you creatively and how much do you open yourself to their advice?
I love to learn, especially from some of the best producers in the world. I’m always open to feedback and suggestions, as I want my music to be as good as any Top 40 song. I’ve worked with producers who have created songs with Selena Gomez, John Legend, Fifth Harmony and more. So I trust their direction and judgment but will always give my honest opinion to make sure the songs still feels like me. I’m lucky that they are so open to my creative input and always work collaboratively.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! I’ve been working on a whole bunch of new songs. Really trying to redefine my sound. I’m a perfectionist (as most creative are) so it always takes me a little longer than I initially anticipate getting everything finalized. But I am so ready for the world to hear my new music!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
End of October!
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes absolutely. It’s something I have wanted to do for a while. Just working on the right opportunity.
What else is happening next in Arlene Zelina’s world?
Just working really hard at getting my originals released! More updates soon 🙂
