Toby Corton & His Band By Chance have just revealed a video for new single ‘My Religion’ , which was conceptualised and directed by Toby himself. Watch HERE
The second single to be released from his forthcoming debut EP , My Religion’ was written in response to hearing about Mike Pence’s belief in gay conversion therapy. In his own words, ‘It’s about the religious justifications that are used to subject people to suffering, the rhetoric of trying to “save” gay people. It’s a “F**k You!”, to those ideas. We don’t need saving, we need support, acceptance and love.’
The video follows suit, displaying a there’s nothing wrong with us attitude. ‘After seeing anti-pride protestors during my Pride experience, I wanted the video to reject these ideas. It’s a display of freedom, despite the fact that there are those that would wish to oppress LGBT+ individuals freedoms. I wanted the video to display these vibrant characters inhabiting spaces that appear bleak, a metaphor for the vibrancy brought by LGBT+ people in what can sometimes be quite bleak and oppressive situations.’ A refreshing mix of retro and modern influences Toby describes his sound as ‘a modern British take on Neo-Soul. Jazz, soul, r’n’b with an indie sensibility’.The talented singer/songwriter has quicklydeveloped from acoustic performances to now working with a full live band, recently selling-out their second only ever live gig together at Servant Jazz Quarters in East London.
Toby’s first ever demo ‘Hazy Sunday’ was released last year and currently stands at an impressive 65,000 SoundCloud streams. The single also attracted the attention of Colors Berlin who invited Toby in for a live session and also led to a performance at Pride 2017 in Trafalgar Square .
You can catch Toby Corton & His Band By Chance live at The Windmill in Brixton on Monday 26th November 2018.
